Pregnant and craving gluten!

I am just over 6 weeks pregnant and have started experiencing severe food aversions and nausea. I cannot stand the smell and taste of cooked vegetables, and struggle with protein as well. The only things I seem to crave is dairy (which I haven't eaten in months) and carbs, specifically in the form of GLUTEN, which I have not eaten in over a year!

I have Hashimotos thyroiditis and have been told by my functional medicine doctor to avoid gluten at all costs but cannot help but fantasise about pasta, ravioli, sandwiches, chocolate milk and emmenthal cheese!

I've been having boiled white potatoes but they're not cutting it!

Any suggestions?

I have trouble stomaching natto at the best of times, let alone when pregnant and nauseous! Have been loading up on starches and legumes but the idea of a toasted cheese and tomato sandwich is just too strong!

if it is the Ca may I suggest egg shells (duly ground to a powder in a coffee grinder), if it is the K2 may I suggest natto in the morning, with rice and olive oil. If it is the carbs, just load up. There are many high carb paleo foods: buckwheat, rice, potatoes, various legumes, sweet potatoes, potatoes, olives, figs, nuts, winter squash, sunflower and pumpkin seeds, taro...

Yeah you're right, it's the carbs that I'm craving rather than gluten itself. I will try gluten free versions and eat some dang cheese :)

The idea of coconut milk makes my stomach turn :( I have some gluten free pasta so will try that, and maybe make my own gluten free bread. It's just frustrating that all the things I should be eating make me want to hurl!

Could you try and see if alternatives to the things you are craving will satisfy the craving? Gluten-free products, or better yet, make something from scratch so you can control the ingredients. Also, try coconut milk instead of regular milk. Or make a smoothie with it. It may not be exactly what you're craving, but it might hit the spot anyway. Good luck!

When you're pregnant your body may crave specific foods at specific times of development. You should listen to your body and just try to get the best whole food form of what you're craving (whole grain or grass fed dairy for example).

  1. Eat the cheese, your baby may need some nutrients from there (like Ca or K2).
  2. Eat gluten free pasta and gluten free bread, because you aren't craving gluten you are craving pasta and sandwiches. Have you ever bought or cooked with gluten in and of itself? It's not that good by itself, TF you aren't craving it, you're craving the foods gluten is typically added to.
