Hey, I am new to paleo, just about a week or so. I have noticed, what may be a disturbing change in my bowel movements. 1. I hardly go anymore, and there isn't much when I do (I have heard this is normal so I am not really concerned). What I am concerned about is the color and texture. It is nearly black. I don't think it is GI bleeding as it isn't tarry and it isn't pure black, more of a just very very dark. It also isn't always like this; I figure if it was a GI bleed it would be pretty consistent. I guess I should give you a sample of my meals for the last couple days. Monday, breakfast (I haven't been nearly as hungry so I usually eat 2 meals a day sometimes 3) I had a chef salad with no cheese, I did have ranch dressing but after being strict for a full week I figured a little something like that would be fine. For lunch Actually I had more salad I went to sweet tomatoes (I don't know if I am wrong but I figure it's mostly paleo and since it was my reward day I could fit in a little non paleo if I really felt I needed it like the dressing before). I pretty much just had a spinach salad with tomatoes, mushrooms, sunflower seeds, red peppers, broccoli, artichoke hearts, and a ton of grilled chicken (I topped with dressing that i am sure once again wasn't paleo). For dinner I had some sauteed meatballs, chicken sausage with all paleo ingredients in natural casings and mushrooms, tossed in sun dried tomato pesto (had a tiny bit of cheese in it). The next morning all systems normal in the morning bathroom department, but still quite a small amount (once again I heard that is normal). Tuesday (yesterday) For breakfast I had some more of those paleo sausages and some sauerkraut. For lunch I had sliced turkey wrapped around sliced avocado with bacon and some horseradish mustard. For dinner I cooked off a bunch of chicken I marinated in lemon juice mustard and olive oil, chopped it up with avocado, and bacon. Then tossed it with some paleo mayo I made. Like paleo chicken salad. Chicken was on sale so I bought that and figured the chicken salad method would be a good way to add fat. This morning I had the small amount (though larger than lately) very dark poop. But it wasn't black it almost seemed green and it certainly wasn't tarry. No excessive wiping or anything. This is the third time I have had it. The first two times I chalked it up to the two days of paleo chilli I had eaten, as it was very dark brown almost reddish like the chilli itself. So I guess I am just wondering if all of this is normal? I am extremely overweight at 327lbs. though I was 331 8 days ago when I started, so that is nice. I forgot to mention I am also taking a daily vitamin, just to cover all my bases. I don't know if I am just freaking out because I have spent the last 4 years of my life with diarrhea almost every single day or what. If anyone has any insight please let me know.

It makes no sense to supplement iron. It's so freaking easy to get from food.

Thanks. The vitamin contains 100% Daily Allowance of Iron. I am not really concerned as at this point I am pretty convinced it isn't blood. I feel if it were it would be actually black not just very dark, and a tarry consistency, Also I feel it would be a more than 3 out of 8 days thing.

We can't advise you on this without knowing you've talked to your doctor. Please take care of that and then share any diet/health questions you still have for us. Take care!

Sounds normal to me while your body is adjusting.

Add a bit more fat, make sure you are hydrated and take 200-400 mg Magnsium Citrate before bed to help avoid constipation.

Iron can cause your feces to be very dark. Double check how much you vitamin contains, combined with the spinach and red meat, you might be getting more iron than your used. But I would check with your doctor if you are concerned.
