To all you Boston folk out there...

I'm going to be in Boston this summer and am trying to figure out how I will eat while I am there. There are some questions on here pertaining to that, but any help you can offer would be much appreciated (i.e. where the best places to buy foods are).

Mainly though I am concerned about meat. Lately I have been in a crusade against plastic. The more I learn, the more I adamantly avoid it. I think the only way to keep my meat from getting tainted with endocrine disrupters is to buy my own cow straight from the farm.

So, in an effort to remove leeched chemicals from my diet and get good quality meat, I'm looking for some people to cowpool with.

Any Boston-living Paleo folk looking to cowpool?

I'm not a big fan either but its really not much of a problem when frozen except for the shrink wrapping itself since it has to be heated. Maybe ask the seller about the process? Looks like USW is heated at the perimeter so shouldn't contaminate the meat. Also a pretty strong plastic.

I agree - farmers market is another good option. I think they go to a few others if Waltham is too far.

I hate plastic too! Good for you - it is a killer! Styrofoam too!

There's a farm in Wayland (two towns farther than Waltham from the middle of Boston) that does wholesale quantities of cow (quarter/half/full) and has a farmstand with grassfed meat. They say that if you buy a quarter cow or more, it is "cut and wrapped to your specifications" so it wouldn't hurt to find out if you can specify it not be wrapped in plastic.

The website for the farm is http://www.mainstonefarm.com/

I get my meat from 8 OClock Ranch CSA and my local farmers market. It's all wrapped in plastic. If you found a local place that would do paper wrapped meat, I'd be interested, but I don't have a lot of storage space for more than 20 lb at a time.

I'm interested. I am in Somerville.

Grass-fed beef around here is EXPENSIVE.

South End here. I get my meat either from US Wellness or from Caledonia Farm, who will be at the Waltham Farmers Mkt starting this month. Dave's beef is always frozen, US Wellness will sell you unfrozen but they only ship it once a month and it's expensive. Both vacuum-seal everything in plastic.

I don't think anyone other than maybe the meat counter at Whole Foods will sell you fresh meat that's not wrapped in plastic and even there the butcher paper has a poly liner.

BTW Caledonia's beef is awesome, much better than US Wellness. I just bought about 20lb from him (Dave).

I live in Boston (Waltham actually) but just buy from US Wellness. Does that not work for you? Another Paleo couple in my building just buys from the local CSA I think, though that requires a bit more commitment and by my experience doesn't really save money.
