Am I actually getting any zinc?

I have white spots under my fingernails. I use cronometer and it shows that I take in about 16.5mg of Zinc dailyfrom beef .. but I eat it with white rice which contains phytic acid (albeit small amounts) and about 1mg of copper which is a good ratio I thought.

Phytic acid binds to Zinc I believe .. would it make it ALL unavailable or just some of it?

"Seems to be under the nails .. some say it is calcium .. some say it is copper and some say it is zinc"...usually this info is talking about white marks that are in the nails, ie. the white marks will move with the nail growth until they eventually drop off the end :) , here's the wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leukonychia

If your white marks are indeed under the nail & do not more with nail growth, then it could be this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muehrcke's_nails

good advice, and a way of testing one's body that can only do good. But eat 6, just to make sure.

Is it a bump or a spot? :o

Never seen anything like that, I just assumed you were talking about the white spots that are very common on peoples fingernails.

Try a zinc tally test. May not be perfect, but it seems to work. I bought some from amazon, shake the bottle, put one drop on your tongue and swish it around. If it takes like water, you need more zinc. The stronger the taste (to the point of revulsion) the less supplemental zinc you need.

eat a couple oysters and if you feel drastically different the next day you'll know that you are/were deficient

I'm not a doctor or a scientist. Intuitively I would say no, especially since like you said white rice doesn't have a ton of it and probably less after cooking or soaking.

That being said if you were deficient in zinc or copper already and you are eating phytic acid on top of that it would obviously not help the issue. Either way the issue would not be with your phytic acid intake, it would be with your diet.

Check how much of those nutrients you are consuming, if you're low try to consume more of them. Don't worry about the phytic acid unless you're consuming large/unusual quantities of it.

If the issue is serious enough see a doctor or maybe get your levels of those nutrients checked. ( Assuming those deficiencies could cause your condition )

As you said, phytic acid binds to zinc, so i guess if you took in large enough quantities of it it may bind to all the zinc...probably not though.

You're basing this all on the white spots on your fingernails? I'm pretty sure those can be caused by bumping your fingers where the nail is forming. E.G. cuticle trama
