Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis

Answered on August 19, 2014

the device that was used on me consisted of four surface electrodes; two on my right hand and two on my right foot. the doctor said the analysis would take a few days to come back but she could tell me that i am phase 6 which means what exactly?

i think it was good news?

EDIT:i found this on a naturopath's web site. is this possible?

Bio-Impedance Analysis (BIA) also known as Bio-electrical Impedance Analysis or BIA, this is a widely-accepted method of measuring the ratio of body fat against lean muscle mass due to its simplicity, speed and noninvasive nature. A Bio-Impedance Analysis helps to determine a realistic measure relating to your picture of health and well-being, and may help in planning goals for weight management or in achieving a better body balance for health improvement and prevention of illness.

Bio-Impedance Analysis gives valuable information on cellular health, metabolism, toxicity to help create naturopathic, nutrition, or exercise programs suited to your individual needs. The following measurements are taken: ???Overall Cell Health ("Phase Angle"): This is a key indicator of your overall health. The higher the number, the healthier you are. ???Body Composition: Indicates the body's percentage of fat and muscle. Important because the more body fat you have, the more inflammation you have - this is a significant risk factor for a number of diseases, especially heart disease, because inflammation stresses key parts of your body defense including your liver, immune system and adrenal glands. ???Metabolism: Indicates if your body is breaking down healthy or unhealthy tissue for energy. Obviously, the higher your metabolism, the less fat you have. ???Water inside/outside of cells: When your body has a high level of toxicity, there is more water outside your cells than inside them. Having more water outside of your cells dilutes the toxins and helps to make them less harmful to your body. However, this is not a healthy state to be in because the inside of your cells do not have enough water to function properly. ???Hydration: If your body is low on water, your metabolism slows. Problems resulting from dehydration include headaches, fatigue, and sweet cravings. It may surprise you that most people are chronically dehydrated because they do not drink enough water

The BIA is a non-invasive test performed at our center. It is one of the key longevity testing markers to evaluate where you are at in the quest to be as healthy as possible.

It is a cheap quantified self testing method to tell you about trends in case you cant afford a doc or testing

Yup. It isn't very precise (whether or not you've worked out, eaten a meal, or are dehydrated can throw it off), but if you test consistently under the same conditions you can track the overall trend of increasing or decreasing lean mass/fat mass.

It's been around a while (same sort of technology as in body fat scales). My recollection is that it had the same problem (different hyrdration levels gave different results). Not sure if they've fixed that. Phase 6 probably refers to Phase Angle. I remember seeing some studies saying people with cancer with 5 or 6+ phase angles survived a couple months longer than people with less. Don't recall any claims being made that it represents "overall health" though. Other than that, sounds like a bit of overmarketed hype to get you to buy services/items from them.

in your opinion, what information is this tool capable of revealing? i was left with the impression that it would be more than just body composition.

Saw one at Costco last week for under $25. I have a HBF-500 Omron that I bought four years ago for around $60.

I think you can achieve the same results by standing on a scale and putting a 9V battery on your tongue.

Sounds like neo-voodoo, to be honest.

Very valuable as a tool as one progresses because it is minimaly invasive and tracks the trend in which you are heading.

I need to get one.

Bioelectrical impedance (BEI) is used to test body composition.

It works by passing a weak electrical current through your body, and, due to the varying conductivity of hydrophilic tissues (lean body mass and body water) vs hydrophobic tissues (fat), it can estimate your body composition within a margin of error that is typically +/- 5%.

I have used a hand held BEI unit and put it up against skin fold testing (Skindex) and dual x-ray absorbtometry (DEXA) and it is has held up reasonably well.

Even when using a BEI device that used contacts on both my hand and foot, the results were available within a minute or two, so I have no idea why it would take a few days. I think that this additional time is for "analysis" and the subsequent "recommendations" (i.e. sales pitch) that will compliment your actual results.

"Phase 6" is not a medical or physiological term. I would be wary of putting too much value on which "phase" you are. Just get the raw data and evaluate it for yourself!

I had one one as part of a baseline exam, then, whoops! You've had a hip repacement? Yes, it was right there in my history. Consider the results useless. I think it's supposed to eadure body composition - % fat, muscle, etc...no titanium allowed.
