Buy sustainably farmed palm oil then. West African palm oil is good. Like any food, know your source.

Well, it is probably hard to get your hands on adorable baby seal oil... If you can't eat Palm Oil, butter/ghee and coconut oil would suffice.

Shortening is killing humans. I don't know what coconut oil kills, but it's probably uglier than orangutans.

Please, please, please, stop letting yourself be scared by the mean people who pretend to teach you stuff. Your teachers are more dangerous to the planet than palm oil, and most of these recycling projects actually waste more resources. Usually, if it is a good idea to recycle something, someone will show up and pay you for it. If they make people do it, and use government money, it means the whole thing is a fraud.

At one point in the recent past, virtually all vegetable shortening was hydrogenated -- basically full of the villainy of trans fat. Nowadays, food processors have methods to make vegetable shortening without always hydrogenating the oils. For me, I'll still with natural fats and oils -- I really don't want to start using a product that could be as bad as trans fats were one day.

Why is palm shortening bad? I've seen this ingredient used in some Paleo baking recipes. :)

You can get high quality palm shortening (certified organic, non-hydrogenated). It is flavorless and scentless -- unlike unrefined palm oil -- and can therefore be used for more types of cooking.

I don't like palm oil's flavor. So palm shortening is very appealing.

I'm actually doing my Girl Scout Gold Award project on the devistation palm oil plantations cause... I've even seen it first hand. I visited Costa Rica with the Girl Scouts and the plantaions spread for miles and miles... it doesn't just effect orangutans, it effects tigers, monkeys, and so many other animals.

Palm Oil plantations are leading to huge destruction of virgin rainforests, eg. in Indonesia, where the orangutan is severely threatened due to loss of habitat - precisely these rainforests! Please replace palm oil products wherever you can!

You can substitute ... palm oil. Just make sure it's unrefined and absolutely sure it's not hydrogenated. Avoid the shortening, stick with the oil.

If you must replace it, coconut oil should work in place of palm oil, depending on what you are making.

Checkout this Mark's Daily Apple post for more info.

... also, search PH, too -- this has been brought up before.

Please dont give us that orangutan rainforest propaganda. Its a propaganda launched by the the West and they seed oil industries like the soybean industry. You should see what the soybean plantations did in Brazil, species that havent been even documented yet whipped out and native tribes just pushed off their land where they lived for thousand of years buldozzed off. Maleysia still has over 50% of land a rainforest, only "problem" would be some small % of oil coming from the western part of Indonesia.

I really dont understand why everybody is so against it, its never over 10% pufa, like olive oil but its not talked about, are there quality issues since more than 90% is coming from two third wors countries Maleysia and Indonesia. Why would you want to replace it?

i don't want to use palm products because of the devistation it causes to the rainforests so I need a replacement in cooking since a lot of paleo recipes call for it which in my opinion defeats the purpose of trying to be better and healthier. If this is going to help distroy the rainforestes I might as well just go back to eating they way I was.
