[meta] Not able to log in?

Answered on August 19, 2014

I tried logging in from my computer and the page kept timing out, I eventually pulled up the page in IE to no avail. However the error IE gave is that "paleohacks.stackexchange.com" is not set up to establish a connection on port "https" with this computer. I then inspected the form using chrome and changed the URL to http instead of https and was able to log in successfully. I'm posting this question in part to hope this gets resolved and in part to help anyone else who has the same problem. Maybe it was a fluke, but I've tried it several times now and it seems to be a legit problem.

THE FIX:

If you are using chrome or firefox then

  • RIGHT CLICK the Login Button and click "INSPECT ELEMENT"
  • Change where it says :

action="https://paleo.stackexchange.com/users/password/validate"

to

action="http://paleo.stackexchange.com/users/password/validate"

  • Enter your username and password as normal and then left click login.

If you are using a different browser:

  • Download chrome or firefox and see above.

Yea, this would really only be an issue if you're on an insecure network. Most the people using the inspect element work-around shouldn't be on tablets/smartphones though since no tablets/smartphones I know of have this ability. TF, I'm hoping people use this on responsible networks, not on a laptop at a Starbucks for example where someone could be sniffing all the traffic. And especially not if you use this username/pass for other secure accounts on other sites (emails, banks, social networks).

It's worth noting that this will make the point of login insecure, but it's not like it's your bank account info. ;-)

But a lot of people won't be able to log in till this is fixed. Especially those using smart phones and tablets who can't inspect and change elements.

Yea, and if you do log out, you can log back in by inspecting the element on the form and changing it from https... to http...

Paleohacks is a subsidiarity of stackexchange from its' beta days when it was semi-freeware. Paleohacks got grandfathered in so we can still use it even though stackexchange doesn't offer this package anymore. Are you telling me that you can log out and log in fine on your computer greymouser?

Paleohacks does not run on the stackexchange network, so "paleohacks.stackexchange.com" is not going to be the right address at all. (PH just uses the same codebase as stackoverflow / stackexchange, it does not run on the same site, AFAIK.)

You should not be connecting to "https" (which doesn't even resolve for me?), just plain old http://paleohacks.com

I'm not sure how stackexechange.com got wrapped into this fluke.

Also, it's be a problem with it's SSL connection, so to speak, not SSH, which uses SSL, but it a totally different thing. :-)

UPDATE: However, I just tried to log in with a new browser session (login credentials not cached), and I get an error page after I click 'login' - it cannot connect to "https://paleo.stackexchange.com/users/password/validate". I cannot connect to "https://paleo.stackexchange.com" (which is required for login) but I can successfully connect to "http://paleo.stackexchange.com" (which redirects to paleohacks.com as expected).

I can't register my account. Could these issues be related? Does anyone know when registration and login functionality will be restored?
