Whey Protein/Other Dairy

I am roughly 90% Paleo compliant, and have felt the best I ever have. Dairy is one thing that I haven't fully given up. I have yogurt 2-3 times a week, will add a few tablespoons of milk to my coffee, and still have whey protein after lifting. I don't feel like it affects me. My question is, how bad is dairy relative to grains? And how many people use whey protein that are otherwise Paleo?

I was using Gold Standard, but now order the cold filtered whey (vanilla flavored sweetened with stevia) from TrueNutrition.com. I'll spare you the explanation behind cold vs micro filtered vs other types of whey they offer (go to site and read up, all info is there). You can mix flavorings, additives, sweeteners, etc to make your own custom protein mix. I like it and my mix tastes/mixes great! It's cheaper in the end than buying some name brand proteins too. Make/buy a small batch and try it for yourself.

What particular brand do you use? I've enjoyed Gold Standard in the past, but I don't like the way it tastes when mixed with water.

I think I feel better without dairy, and I was vegan for a long time so it isn't difficult for me to be dairy free- but when I am Paleo I seem to never feel full/satisfied unless I include yogurt, so I do, because it makes the elimination of grains/sugar etc possible, and that is what is most important for me.

I would say if you feel fine eating dairy, then continue to do so- yogurt is a good choice. But make sure it is organic since non-organic dairy products contain pesticides and hormones and an entire host of other things (same for whey- organic is best).

Also, as someone else mentioned above, raw milk is superior in every way. Pasteurized milk is actually very damaging. Goat and sheep's milk is usually easier to digest- and full fat dairy products are best.

Dairy seems to give me terrible back-acne (bacne). When I completely eliminate dairy from my diet, my skin clears up in a matter of days. It makes me so sad because I love all kinds of dairy foods. :(

It's pasteurized A1 dairy that you need to worry about. Full-fat/whole RAW dairy is a better choice and raw goats dairy is an even better choice still. Raw dairy is also less allergenic than pasteurized dairy.

Dairy is a direct precursor to DHT so it might be worse for males than females.

Whey protein is fine (at least for me, I use it daily). I'll also add that I use a cold processed/filtered whey (hardly any lactose or sugar). As for milk, I can't give advice as I don't use it.
