Hey guys,

Before i converted to eating paleo i used to chew chewing gum daily! Is it really that bad for you as i miss having it! Would probably only chew like 1/2 bits a day but what's everybody's thoughts on it? Does anybody else chew it?

Ryan

I've recently switched to "natural" gum. I like Glee. No fake sugars, non GMO. I HAVE to have gum while working out! Its not as tasty and it doesn't last as long...but its my only option. It does have brown rice syrup in it though...better than aspartame!

I was more of a mint person - I had to have them while driving! (Gum lost its flavor before the end of my 30 min commute to and from work, and I hated having no trash can to throw it it!) I have no replacement for them, nor have I looked for one. It was a mindless eating habit that I have now broken (yay!).

Personally, I would say no to artificial gums, and stick to a natural version/alternative if you absolutelymusthavesome.

Chewing gum once in a while shouldn't be problematic for most people who don't have existing health challenges in the jaw and neck regions. But our bodies definitely pay a price for chronic gum chewing. Just something to be aware of.

In olden days in certain parts of the world, the chewing of gum after meals was used (and effectively i might add) to remove food particles and make the mouth a cavity free zone. I am not talking about what was later done to this tradition by adding sugar and chemicals, and then in a hasty retreat from sugar, which creates the right ph balance for decay causing bacterias, aspartame.

sorbitol feeds the "bad" bacteria in your mouth; xylitol feeds the "good" bacteria. See Dr Ellie's (dentist) website for more info

I've definitely noticed that the alcohols in sugar-free gum make me gassy. It's unfortunate 'cause I used to chew them all the time!

I used to chew so much gum that my jaws started clicking. My jaws are now misaligned but I'm not certain whether it was caused by the gum chewing. But yeah, I definitely had too much gum--chewed it for nearly half the day, everyday.

I think having some gum after meals is good to clean the teeth, but having it between meals stimulates digestion and is probably not great for digestive glands.
