I've been wondering about the medicinal values of herbs and herbal extracts, and wondering what the paleo outlook on these are?

Since most extracts (even the ones labeled "organic") have alcohol in them, I tend to avoid them. My wallet thanks me, and to be honest, I really don't miss it in my diet. To each his own though, so if you absolutely love it, buy it. There are worse things that you could ingest than vanilla extract. Believe me.

I spent several years trying to cure my sinus problems with extracts, herbs, tea pills, etc. Went to ND's , Chinese Med doctors, and honestly none of it worked. Elimination of grains & sugar is the only thing that cured me. No more freaking sinus infections and I can breathe through my nose 95% of the time, except for an occasional seasonal allergy day.

So my stance is look for the cause and not a bandaid approach.

The typical procedure for making an extract is to simply let it sit in a hard liquor for a prolonged period of time (vodka and bourbon are popular choices). You can make an extract out of most anything this way.

Is it paleo? Hmmm...the flavors your are extracting are likely paleo, and many would say that alcohol, to an extent, is paleo. But that's from a recreation angle, and we don't actually aim to recreate anyways. I'd say they're likely perfectly fine (I, myself, consume vanilla extract regularly). Just, as with everything in the store, be careful about the ingredient list. Extracts aren't the cheapest things to create so many brands cut corners and use faker ingredients. The ingredients should be the flavor extract, alcohol and (maybe) sugar (it's not evil when it makes sense, some extracts are meant to be sweet).
