What conditions or aliments have appeared or gone since you went Paleo?

What conditions or aliments have come or gone since you went Paleo? Has your body really changed for the better? Have some conditions gotten worse or have some appeared out of nowhere? Your experiences?

When I started Paleo I removed certain foods from my diet like foods that contain simple sugar, some starches and wheat(gluten). My skin rashes and dandruff disappeared in a few weeks. I lost additional 5 pounds of fat. The little bit a brain fog that I had also went away. Then I removed all dairy. Soon after that, my libido started to go down hill and fatigue started to settle in early in the afternoon. I was cranky, restless and a little depressed. Adding vitamin D to my diet helped with the blues, but I started to have lower back pain like never before. One day a friend invited me over to try some bone broth that he was making in large quantities. I took some jars home for a trial run. It was my friend's advice to have a pint before bed. The next morning I felt incredible. I hadn't slept so well in months and my libido started to have a pulse. My back pain had greatly decreased. With a week of drinking the broth my hair started to shine and my skin looked better then before. My bowel movements returned to normal and I had morning energy without any coffee, truly amazing. There is one more interesting note about my story. My local cafe started carrying Mexican Cokes made with real cane sugar. I had not had a coke in 5 months till that point. I broke down and had a one instead of coffee. Within an hour I had a rush, but the rush came as a jolt to my libido, if you know what I mean. Somehow the sugar mixed with caffeine ignited by sex drive to another stratosphere. In some way, sugar might be needed to run our sex drive. Your thoughts on this and other foods, including bone broth that might have aided or hindered certain conditions in your Paleo life style.

Thanks, I will definitely give that a shot! I love oysters and mussels so it shouldn't be too hard :)

Menstrual cramps get easier if you supplement with zinc (or eat oysters/mussels).

Check my web site for how I went around my constipation and diarrhea IBS problems. The trick is to add fermented foods, especially home-made goat kefir.

I also went from a Levi's 33 loose fit to Levi's 29 skinny fit. Buying new jeans was a nice problem.

Man, I wished this happened to my sinuses! Would you just get regular sinus infections, or a nasal drip, or sinus headaches? My sinuses failed to develop properly (they are tiny and closed off and irregularly shaped) and I've had two surgeries to put stints in. I was hoping maybe paleo would help reduce the frequency of the sinus headaches associated, but no such luck. Any particular things you found helped yours? I currently rinse mine daily (just with salty water) and I take vit D and omega 3's for supplements.

Just the scalp, luckily. The only person who saw it was my wife and whoever was cutting my hair. I was pretty self conscious about having my hair cut for the longest time. The crazy thing was, I would instinctively "pick at my head" to pop the little pimples. My wife would playfully slap my hand and say "stop picking at your head!" I never even realized I was doing it most of the time. Awesome news about your forehead bumps! Glad you got off Accutane before you offed yourself :-o

Forehead or head-head? I got the occasional pimple elsewhere, but my forehead was chronically bumpy from my first year of college, also, and NOTHING I tried got rid of it...including Accutane - they went away, but came back three months later. Worst decision. Anyway, that just blew my mind because my skin was clear within the first week of paleo eating.

I use to have little pimples on my head (gross, I know) ever since my freshman year of college. I tried every fancy shampoo in the book. I tried showering twice per day. I even consulted a dermatologist who said it was "stress" (yeah...thanks, doc)

This went on until I was 30, when I discovered Mark Sisson's website. After one month of going primal/paleo, I noticed the little bumps were gone. I couldn't believe it.

Surge in energy? Great
Saying sayonara to my little beer belly? Super rad

More color in my face and less puffiness in my eyes? Groovy
I'm no longer ravenously hungry all the time? Fanfriggintastic.

But my little head bumps?! Really?! That's when I knew I had stumbled across something truly amazing.

I now use it as my barometer for when I go off plan a bit. When the little pimples show up, I know I'm getting sloppy and have to get my sh*t in order. When I do, they disappear. It may seem insignificant, but to me it really was my "aha" moment.

It could be as simple as a lack of calories.

Not to discount the power of bone-broth, but it might be some of the magic is coming from more calories.

As for your intital question, for me Paleo cured the following:

Overweightness
Acne
Libido problems (probably from weight loss)
Bad Posture
Back problems
Gas
Hair loss (maybe)

Did not cure:

Constipation

Hey all, new here! I have been Paleo since January 1st and have experianced a lot of changes!

  1. As of today I have lost 32lbs and going strong!
  2. Eczema that I have had for most of my life, gone with in 3 weeks!
  3. Skin is mostly clear now. No more back acne either!
  4. My cycle has gon from 45 days long to 32 days and I don't have cramps anymore! Also I used to gain about 3-5lbs now I have noticed that I lose about 2lbs! Crazy!
  5. My mood and outlook on life have improved greatly.
  6. My almost 1 yr old no longer has blow outs and his eczema has disapeared. His is currently drinking grass fed, non-homogenized, lightly pasturized whole milk instead of the nasty formula that I was giving him since I had to stop breastfeeding at 8 months.

So over all everything is going great and I'll never go back to my 3 Dr Pepper a day, pasta 4 times a week, seriously depressed way of life again! Hoping that the inflamation in my back and hips clear up soon. And I need to lose about another 70lbs, but I'll settle for 50 before trying to concieve the next baby :)

You won't believe it but....

The toenail on my beg left toe died 15 years ago after an ingrown nail required surgical removal. I tried all kinds of minerals, herbs, potions and lotions to try and regrow it - nothing worked. Then about 3 weeks into eating paleo, I noticed it started growing again. It's now fully grown back, clear, and strong as if nothing had every happened. Totally wild!

Aside from that, my blood pressure went from 140/90 to 112/72 on average. It only took 2 months to drop like this while measuring and tracking it every day. I used to take fistfulls of herbal supplements to make it go down, but nothing worked as well as lowering my insulin and eating paleo.

My cholesterol and triglycerides also fell to beautifully low levels, although my HDL still sucks (below 40). Granted the ratio between HDL/LDL is perfect because my total cholesterol is so low that the low HDL doesn't really mean anything anymore.

I also dropped from a size 34 jeans size to a 31. I can now wear Levi skinny's and look great! My body fat went from 15% to 9% and is still dropping!

I was a vegetarian and diagosed with autoimmune hepatitis a year ago. I started autoimmune paleo in November, by January my hair stopped falling out, I had more muscle mass, not as tired, my liver labs were finally normal. I was able to stop taking prednisone a few weeks ago. Still taking some other medications but hoping that things continue to improve!

  • -35 lbs dropped.
  • -Mysterious, persistent, decade-long cough stopped and hasn't come back in 12 months.
  • -GERD stopped.
  • -Snoring no longer.
  • -Back pain simply mild, I can stand all day now at work when before I couldn't go longer than 30 minutes.
  • -Headaches of all strengths gone, used to take pills 2-5x a week. Haven't taken any since June last year.
  • -Speaking of headaches, I used to get headaches from hunger. Eye watering ones. Never would feel hunger in my gut. How I can skip 2-3 meals and get only a soft tug in my stomach.
  • -Mental fog lifted, didn't even know there was one.
  • -Goes with the mental fog, but my memory is a tad sharper. I can remember names quite a bit better.

Stomach bloating: gone. Menstrual cramps : rare. Skin on my face : glowing, clear for the first time in my life! Limb inflammation: gone, Lumps in breast gone!! (tender, painful, but non cancerous, they were tested and I was told to live with them) Sleeping soundly, waking up without an alarm. Consistent, normal bowel movements (like clockwork, daily!) Mood swings : gone. Anxiety : almost non existent. Cravings? For fat on occasion only, and I feel no guilt with the occasional indulgence I rarely get sick and have much more energy... I feel alive & healthy :)

I used to have dizzy spells about once per month on the SAD diet (which got worse when I went low-fat "almost vegetarian" + chicken during my first couple of years in college). They got so bad that I felt like I could faint at any second; luckily they usually happened when I was at home. It was then I found out I was slightly anemic due to iron deficiency.

I also had debilitating menstrual cramps that made me completely useless for one week out of the month. I popped Ibuprofen like it was candy just to make it through the day.

So, I'm happy to say that the paleo diet has reversed/improved both of these things. I still get menstrual cramps, but they are so much more manageable (without Ibuprofen--yay!). I also haven't had a dizzy spell since I began eating low-carb (which eventually lead me to paleo a few months later) and I am no longer iron deficient.

Not to mention, I've lost 12 pounds so far and I no longer need to wear make-up for my face to look pretty!

GERD disappeared for me, so that I was able to get off PPIs (Prilosec). I can't claim overweight "disappeared," but I did drop 25lbs, and think I am within a strict "Whole 30" routine's distance of normal body weight for my frame.

My libido did diminish, but in my case this was a positive factor, in the same way that my cravings for sugar, caffeine, and alcohol diminished. Not that my libido was pathological before, nor is it dead now, it's just normal. I think...who really knows?

As for the bone broth miracle, I'm going to differ a bit with another respondent, regarding calories, and suggest it's maybe related more to removal of toxins and pro-inflammatory agents, combined with positive gut flora changes (which bone broths are supposed to be super good at supporting) that account for your improvements. Or maybe it's a little bit of everything.

I've had sinus problems nearly year-round for the past 20 years. Since starting paleo a year ago, they have drastically gone down. I've had a few problem days, but it's nothing like it was before.
