The Everything Paleolithic Diet Book

I was told that all soy is no good. But reading thru my book (see above) there is a page (126) that suggests edamame in the snacks area. Now I'm concerned about the entire book. What are your thoughts about raw edamame?

That does seem to be the biggest issue to me. If the author says "raw edamame" that suggests that they don't know what they're talking about, as in, they literally don't know what that word means.

Unfermented soy is fraught with problems:

  • High levels of soy isoflavones???plant estrogens found in products like soy milk and soy nuts and tofu as well as many menopausal supplements???put women at risk for cardiovascular disease. Edamame, being an unprocessed food and not eaten in huge quantities, has fewer isoflavones, but why ingest them at all?
  • Soy phytoestrogens are potent anti-thyroid agents that cause hypothyroidism and may cause thyroid cancer.
  • High levels of phytic acid in soy reduce assimilation of calcium, magnesium, copper, iron and zinc. Phytic acid in soy is not neutralized by ordinary preparation methods such as soaking, sprouting and long, slow cooking.
  • Trypsin inhibitors in soy interfere with protein digestion and may cause pancreatic disorders. In test animals soy containing trypsin inhibitors caused stunted growth.
  • Soy phytoestrogens disrupt endocrine function and have the potential to cause infertility and to promote breast cancer in adult women.
  • Vitamin B12 analogs in soy are not absorbed and actually increase the body's requirement for B12.
  • Soy foods increase the body's requirement for vitamin D.
  • Soy foods contain high levels of aluminum, which is toxic to the nervous system and the kidneys.

I would be concerned about any book that says you should eat raw edamame. Edamame IS NOT RAW. It's unripe soybeans that have been soaked, boiled, and usually salted.

That being said, unprocessed soy products are not going to kill you, and on the spectrum of bad stuff to eat, it would sit pretty low.

Personally I don't eat soy, the benefits are pretty minor and the taste is God-awful. But if you like edamame, I can think of dozens of things much worse to consume.

The Everything series is kind of like the For Dummies series--general high level overviews of a zillion topics written by maybe expert/maybe not authors in order to cash in on whatever is trendy or people need to learn really quickly. I'd go with one of the more established paleo authors.

I avoid soy pretty fervently, and would definitely not eat edamame as a regular snack. Once or twice a year at a Japanese restaurant--maybe.

Sorry, you didn't say what book you were reading, but regardless, soy is a bean, and it's a particular nasty one at that. Among one of the evil things it does, it's the equivalent of eating estrogen pills.

Others include trypsin inhibitors that prevent you from being able to digest protein.

And that's just the beginning for the non-GMO ones. You can add high glycophosphate pesticide residues for the GMO ones.

Stuff is pure evil. Avoid. If your book told you it's ok to eat, throw the book out, it's a lie. It's only "ok" if your goal is wanting to destroy your health.

I have this recipe book too and also noticed that some of the recipes in it are more 'Paleo' than others!

I think there's a note somewhere in the front or back of the book (I don't have my copy to hand right now) which says that some of the recipes appeared previously in another non-Paleo cookbook. That might explain why a recipe like this one slipped through.

The 'science' section at the beginning of the book which explains the diet isn't that well written either and contains a few errors. However, I think most of the recipes in there are OK. I don't remember there being anything particularly horrific in there which you should never eat, so I wouldn't worry too much.

Regarding 'raw edamame', I'd probably avoid it, but if it's prepared correctly and non-GM it's probably not going to do you much harm if you have it every once in a while (unless you're allergic to soya, of course!). If you must eat soya products, you're much better off going for something fermented like 'natto' which at least has the benefit of probiotic bacteria and extra vitamins.

All soy and soy products in the us is Gmo. If you grow your own soy and ferment it in a still to make almost an alcohol for pickling or frying like the old Asian way then your doing it wrong. Also soy has a very big problem its a incomplete protein. It would be equal to eating the string American cheese instead of Cabot chedder.
