Technology: Helping or Hurting?

Answered on August 19, 2014

I am 21 years old and I have been using the internet since I was around 10 years old. I truly feel the internet and television is effecting our societies brains. Sometimes I wish I could live in the 1800s before all of this technology. I want to feel like a REAL human.. all of these screens (iphone, computer, tv) is really beginning to piss me off.

I love the Paleo community.. people I have something in common with. I wish I had some paleo friends my age that cared about being a TRUE human. Let me know what you think!

I'm a big fan of these topics too. If it weren't as necessary for school or distance communication I would be tech free. I see the use, but I don't like the consequences.

To sum up I am willing to be convinced, but not swayed. Unsubstantiated claims with a statement that I should do some research is not what I consider convincing.

I have no doubt that it changes our brains, given the nature of neurons anything would. On the other hand the only study I can find that links internet usage and fMRI scans shows an increase in cognitive efficiency in older adults*, what is the science you think I am missing? *Can't find the original online, but a summary is available here http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/10/081014111043.htm

I know you are proud of this answer but I disagree with you. Do some research.. the internet is changing our brains. It is making us dumb.

Rotary phone and Black and White TV when I was a kid... I've always viewed technology as a double edged sword. Use it wisely, but don't let it be your life. Sometimes I get the urge to go live with the Amish or Mennonites, but they wear too many clothes; I'm afraid I would suffocate or die of heat stroke. I say that tongue in cheek, but there are a great many things that I admire about their lifestyles.

It's weird to me that the "child" is wanting the simpler way of life vs. the "parents". I guess since i'm 46 it was kind of opposite when I was growing up. They still talk about "the good old days" (non computerized world...they appreciate it, but just don't "live" in it beyond tv, which consists of some news, jeaopardy and old movies). I hope you get what you crave. Hang in there, keep telling yourself it's coming and it will. Put those healthy, good thoughts in your head and keep them there. You're already ahead of the game. Love your parents for who they are but don't lose sight of yourself

I feel like today everything is about INSTANT gratification.. get it NOW, feel good NOW, why wait when you can have it NOW? I think it is hurting our society to be honest.

I am still at home with my parents who still don't care for the paleo diet. There is unhealthy food all over the place and televisions and computers blasting.. iphones ringing all day long. It is making me crazy! I can't wait to get my own place because I am getting rid of this stuff. I just compare people of today to people of the old days.. our society has changed a lot.

I am a real human. The super power our species has is its ability to adapt to new environments and deal with rich informational landscapes. That my landscapes are made up of bits rather then bison doesn't make me feel one bit less human.

Granted I have only been online since I was 15 and that was back in the days of BBSes and usenet, but I feel like the internet is very much a part of my world and I don't see that as a problem.

I would point out that much the same argument was used against literacy, every move that liberalizes information access is set up as compromising our animal selves, but to me we are an animal that hunts information as much as we are an animal who hunts food.

I partly agree with your views about Television and internet, but you would not be able to be part of this great community without the internet. Technology has provided tools to humanity throughout history, it is for us to use them right. A knife can be a great tool in the kitchen but a dangerous tool in the wrong hands..

Kudos to you for being so young and so aware of some of the things in this society that I truly do feel are taking us away from our "human-ness". Do you live without these things? Do you choose to not have a cellphone? Cable tv? Internet? Computer? I'm not asking this in a judgey way which after I read it kinda sounded like I am...I'm asking because i'm curious. We, do not. I would if I could but i'm not the soul decision maker in my family regarding these things so I plunk along like everyone else here and just go through life "connected"..and not the way you're hinting at. I hope you find these things...I hope the older I get, the older my children get that we can allow ourselves some time out from electronics. I love the information I can and do get from internet and various other sources, but I do miss the days of going to the library, looking things up old school way, TALKING to people and not having texting and email so handy...I still am a supporter of snail mail and send things out on a daily basis via USPS...but i'd like to go back too, to the days of less. Thanks for putting out this thought-provoking (to me anyways) question. You are wiser beyond your years :)
