Sudden diarrhea

I have been following paleo about 90% of the time I do eat dairy and last week we were a bit heavy on dairy with no issue but I have not touched it except raw butter and fermented in 4 days. Think cod chowder made with cream, cheese, raw milk, cream of asparagus soup, bunless cheeseburger.

Yesterday I woke up and had to rush to the bathroom with loose stools that varied 3 & 4 on the bristol stool scale [link text][1] [1]: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bristol_Stool_Scale . I went to the restroom twice had some mild cramping throughout the day and nausea when I didn't eat. To keep it simple yesterday I had a light chicken soup, raw milk kefir (which usually halts any stomach upset for me), greek yogurt (for probiotics), 3/4 a stick of beef jerky, and pan fried steak w. a hazelnut based bread I made.

This morning I woke up same bathroom issue went twice #4 stool. Got extremely nauseous and ate 2 slices of hazelnut bread with mashed avocado. Went to the bathroom again still with extreme nausea and now really watery #6 stool.

I also started cutting out sugar (mainly the last few fruits I was eating) and all starchy heavy carbohydrate vegetables ( sweet potatoes, plantains, parsnips, etc..) that two weeks prior I sort of binged on due to my menstrual cycle. I know I really have to regulate how I eat around then. I have never had an issue with dairy previously. The only other factor I can think of is my carb intake has changes. With my cycle two weeks prior I was eating anywhere from 50-100 grams and now I am hitting around 20- 45 carbs.

I read some previous post on this topic and will follow the fasting, eating chicken broth pumpkin mix. Is it safe to drink coconut water or does that have to much sugars or should I just stick to drinking plain water with a pinch of sea salt? Is boxed chicken broth fine if I do not have extra chicken parts to make any? Any thoughts on what I might be doing to cause this or what I should be taking?

feel better!! Try adding a bit of salt and sugar in your fluids if you are getting dehydrated. Hoping yours will pass quickly! Give it at least a week! Now I have a terrible cold, I guess my defenses were down after that bout because I haven't had a cold or flu in over 10 years!!

Thanks for the advice. I tried finding carbon pills harder than I thought it would be. I did not eat yesterday except some broth, got totally weak and nauseous. Ate a scrambled egg this morning and that didn't sit well. No diarrhea except for cramping and one small bowel movement after eating some chicken. I am going to do a modified Specific Carbohydrate Intro diet and see how that works. Thanks for the advice on the fluids they are making me nauseous to but I am trying.

I was thinking food poisoning to still am as I am not sure how a paleo body handles poisoning only thing is yesterday the bathroom issues stopped before noon though the nausea and cramping remained and today I am waiting to see if it stops before noon, so far it looks that way.

Just wash your hands thoroughly with plenty of soap and warm water after using the bathroom and before touching your food and you should be fine.

One other thing does anyone know if it is safe to cook and handle food. I know convention says no its not, but I was wondering if that is just germaphobia speaking or should I really not handle food. I do my weekly cooking today so just wanted to be safe rather than sorry.

I'm not a doctor but,

Cramping.

Nausea.

Diarrhoea.

It sounds like you have caught a mild case of food poisoning. It will probably clear up and you will feel better in a two or three days or so whatever you do.

If it gets worse gets worse or goes on longer then go and see a doctor.

You may have caught the bug from the raw milk products.

Any chance you could have a gut bacterial imbalance? That one of the heavier toxin-producers might have gotten out of control? I keep thinking about how someone in my family once got a c. diff. (clostridium difficile) over-growth...and IIRC they love lactose.

2 wks ago I got hit with something so severe I thought I'd have to go to the hospital at day 5. I've never experienced anything remotely like it. The very same symptoms but as yours but much more very severe (1 on that scale).

I got some 'carbon' and that helped a bit as well as home made chicken consume and potatos and boiled carrots. By day 7 I was doing much better and was able to travel.

I still do not know if it was food poisoning or a bug, but I had eaten at a persons house, something I normally never do. I was also the only report person ill as well.

Hope you feel better soon! Try and find some carbon pills at the drug store, they should soak up any toxins in your body quicker than just letting it run its course. Get lots of fluids!!!
