SousVide Supreme worth it?

I have been mesmerized by the Eades' SousVide Supreme and I know that many in the Paleo community have used it. It looks great, but it is a pretty penny.

I'd like to know - is it worth it? Will I derive benefits in excess of the purchase price? :)

For those unfamiliar with it:

Part of the sous vide taste appeal is that it is in a (plastic) bag so that all the juices are retained. Do you drink the broth from your cooker?

Thanks. I didn't catch that on his site. I asked there too at one point.

According to Richard Nikoley, the foodvac bags are pure HDPE with no BPA.

The SousVideMagic is a much better deal. It is an electronic controller to turn a crockpot or rice cooker into a precise water bath.

I love slow-cooked food but don't really see why I should invest into an expensive machine when my good old crockpot gives me excellent results. And the idea of having to buy specially manufactured plastic bags to cook in puts me right off.

Thanks to a bonus check from work, my SVS was delivered late last week. I haven't done as much as I'd like with it yet, but so far so good. With the schedule that my husband and I have it works out well - it saves dirty dishes and direct kitchen time, for sure. I got home the other day and put in chicken breasts. We went out for a couple of hours and when we got back, they were perfect after a sear. I did a roast another day where it went in in the morning and was finished by dinnertime. I also have a crockpot that I use quite a lot, but there are different things I would cook in each, so I'm still happy I took the plunge on a sous vide. Going to try steak for the first time it in tonight - guess that will be the true test!

Best of luck with your decision. I've heard a lot of people say that as they get more common the price should drop. I bet microwaves were really expensive when they were new too. :)

If I didn't already have an Auberins PID controller hooked up to a rice cooker, I'd buy an SVS in a heartbeat, simply because it's in one compact package. My setup works great, but the tangle of cables is decidedly inelegant.

An Auberin/Sous Vide Magic setup is functionally equivalent and over $200 less.

I second Sous Vide Magic. I use it with a rice cooker and it works very well. I've kept to mostly meat but will try eggs later this week.

Don't have one, but I love slow cooked foods. I've wondered if the cooking bags were BPA free?
