Shallow Reasons to Go Paleo

Answered on August 19, 2014
Created February 10, 2012 at 8:36 PM

I know there are solid reasons to give people as to why they should go paleo, but it has been my experience that what often piques someone's interest in a subject are not the good, deep parts, but the shallow ones. Some of the "shallow" things I've noticed about paleo on this board are:

  • Can eat real food and still lose weight.

  • Better ability to hold your liquor (not sure I buy this one, but I have seen it mentioned).

  • Fewer wrinkles (due to not eating vegetable oils high in oxidants/free-radicals).

So, can anyone think of any other shallow benefits of going paleo? Something that can be used as an ice breaker to gain someone's interests by saying "Well, you know, if you go paleo..."

Exactly Tall dog. I could never be a hundred percent clear when gluten was a part of my diet. I actually got tested for celiac, inconclusive by the way, but there have always been 'issues' until I eliminated it. In the words of my doctor; "if cutting gluten from your diet solves the problems, then why not just keep doing it?"

Apparently I'm one of those that has the opposite affect. I don't get hangovers since going Paleo. That also happened to me years ago when I did a cleanse on the Candida Diet. Don't know what it is but I am so grateful.

Are people claiming they can drink more now? Paleo has made me such a cheap date, I think it was all the booze sponging grains and late night trips to IHOP that used to allow me to drink more.

Any "shallow" reason to go paleo, is still a great reason to go paleo. "Going" paleo is great for anyone, regardless of the paths/reasons why we came here. We aren't vegans, we don't need to justify our health by moral or superficial/trendy standards. It works. Who cares what your reasons are? Glad you're here.

Eat good food (bacon, eggs, steaks, etc.) AND get lean at the same time? Yes, please sign me up :-) I lost 100 pounds calorie counting and still craved sweets and processed foods. I found out i had a gluten sensitivity, started paleo in November and don't crave the bad foods anymore!

Health and satiety are great bonuses

I am paleo for the health benefits, no other reasons really. If I can get a 6 pack at the same time then that is just an added bonus. I know that there are lots of other people here who feel the same.

I don't consider any of these reasons "shallow." Who defines that? For example, "eat real food and lose weight" seems 100% legit, rational, healthy, and an example of a rather profound revelation about how food works. That's anything but shallow in my opinion.
