paleo-vegan irony

Answered on August 19, 2014

Anyone else see the irony in the fact that the potato diet has become a popular hack within the paleo community? Of course, it's ironic because the (typically) high fat, anti-vagan movement is accepting a vegan icon's "Starch Solution" as an effective tool for weight loss. That icon is of course Dr. McDougal, who has been saying a potato diet is the best diet for safe weight loss and a healthy life for many years now.

I would caution you from using paleohacks (or at least those who post regularly) as a representative sample of the full paleo community. But I understand your point, and my comment was more in jest.

Yes, when I was doing the potato diet for a week, I got a real kick out of telling people that I was "going vegan" during that time.

Oh, no worries, just post your email here and I'll add you to the list. Srs though, paegan would be more carbs than the typical low carb approach to paleo and more fats/proteins than the 80-10-10 approach to vegan. I understand that vlc and 80-10-10 are only subsets of paleo and veganism. Everyone who's vegan does not eat low fat and everyone paleo does not eat low carb. But if we took a poll on PH and on a vegan site I'd put money that the averages would be a low carb on ph and low fat/protein on vegan.

If only McDougall would add animal foods to his starch solution and cut out the grains, he'd be on to something. This is actually what I've done lately and I feel tons better than when I was McDougalling on grains and no animal foods. I was always hungry on that diet.

Popular hack? Aside from a handful of folks doing it weight loss purposes, I don't see anybody else getting too excited about it. It's a semi-starvation diet for weight loss. It's not a surprise folks lose weight with it.

I'm not surprised starches are getting more and more attention in the paleo diet. I was thinking a year ago that it would be the next evolution of the paleo diet. At the core of paleo isn't a magical macronutrient ratio, but rather a whole-food centric diet.

I think if paleo and vegan combined into paegan or veleo we would be better off. Vegetables are healthy, meat is healthy, and tubers can be the gray matter connecting the two diets. Lots of fructose, lots of grains and lots of seeds probably aren't healthy, most people can agree on that imo.
