Plantains are 100% paleo, be it if you follow paleo for reenactment or for inspired modern health reasons.
Carbohydrate and starch dense foods are not for everyone, and plantains certainly are that. However, like many of paleo-ers that eat carbohydrate and starch dense foods, plantains are most definitely on that list.
If you are following VLC, you probably have to skip the plantains. If you have a general LC diet, they are probably at best a sometimes food. However, if you follow a general paleo diet and are only LC in terms of being lower-carb than SAD, then plantains can definitely be factored in. And if you are physically active, plantains are almost certainly a good, easy, and available choice.
Plantains are a real, whole food. Enjoy them!
