Paleo and Medication

Answered on August 19, 2014

Does anyone here take a medication, not birth control, and have had no side effects while staying Paleo? Unforuntately, I have an over active bladder and am nervous bout what the pill will do to my inflammation-free body. And self experimentation just doesn't seem like something I would be eager to do.

I've been Paleo for almost a year and the problem got increasingly worse when I went back to school. So maybe it's stress induced?

Ugh. I'm currently taking a synthetic hormone. Break it to me gently, please.

Thanks! My biggest concern is will the medication cause an inflammation and bloating? I hope that doesn't happen.

No, I was consider medication for over active bladder. Just wanted to know if anybody had bad reactions from taking medication after going Paleo. I like staying "clean" but my problem is clearly...a problem.

Actually when I read the question seemed like she was afraid to start paleo for fear it may interfere with the pill...which would obviously be a an unfounded fear.

Seems like she's considering a medication for her over-active bladder.

Staying clean, staying paleo doesn't necessarily mean sacrificing the quality of your life by avoiding a medication that will help you. I've taken different medications over the time I've been paleo with no unusual side effects. If it will help, take it. If you find it causes issues, stop taking it. It is so very highly unlikely any prescribed medication will cause you lasting damage.

Self-experimentation would be best. I would give Paleo at least 6 months before going off your meds. Who knows? Maybe you won't need them anymore. I am still taking my Prozac =/ One every two days or so. I suffer from debilitating depression and anxiety. So I am trying to allow my body to heal some before I get off of it. I also plan to do the GAPS protocol. Have you looked into that at all?

I take medication to help deal with ankylosing spondylitis. I've been working with pretty strict paleo for a year (and not-so-strict paleo for about 5). Paleo has DEFINITELY helped with my autoimmunity and overall health, but I came to the difficult conclusion that I needed a little push from medical science. Since starting the meds, inflammation in my body has disappeared and I've been able to do things I haven't done in 20 years. My hope is that paleo + medication will allow me to get super strong and healthy so that I can come off the meds in a much better state than when I went on.

It's a risk, but so is doing nothing when you're chronically inflamed.

I take adderall or vyvanse daily.

Are you considering the pill or something else? It's not clear from your post. Regardless, I would avoid synthetic hormones like the plague that they are.
