Over a month on paleo and I'm not losing weight!

I've been doing a pretty good job of sticking to the "rules" and not cheating, but I'm not losing any weight. I know the point is to feel better and I do, but I had gained 10 lbs before I started Paleo and I'd like my clothes to fit again!

I'm 5'6 and I weigh 180lb. I don't exercise nearly as much as I should (the disadvantage of having very athletic kids that need to be at practice and games all over the freaking city!)

This is what I eat:

B: 2 eggs and about 2 cups of spinach/onion/bacon mixture OR 1 cup of mashed butternut squash/sweet potato with a cup of ground sausage and 1/4 apple.

L: A large piece of meat (chicken usually) with a side of cooked veggies - usually carrots, green beans, or cauliflower.

D: A large piece of meat (chicken or pork usually) with two veggies (carrots, cauliflower, green beans, broccoli usually)

S: 1 Larabar (if I want something sweet - they don't have anything in them that isn't paleo friendly - no artificial sweeteners, no sugar, no grains. so they shouldn't be a big deal)

S: Maybe one of those snack size ziploc bags of fruit (berries or apples usually)

I drink decaf/herbal/green tea with honey all day and sometimes I have a kombucha.

I don't count calories. I guess I need to? I'm cooking in olive oil (which I know is against the rules, but DH is totally convinced that coconut oil is going to cause him to have a heart attack so I have to sneak it in here and there)

Advice?

Paleo is not a weight loss diet. - Also, Larabars are carby and sugary. Don't matter if it's fructose or glucose. It's sugar. Dried fruit are also carb-bombs. Paleo will make you feel great, but I'm sort of sick of people flocking to Paleo as a weight loss trick.

It's easier and cheaper if you don't have the $ for a food scale?

What does that mean? I diced up a pound of bacon a few nights ago __ could not have been more than 1/2 cup.

If someone is doing non-ketosis dieting calories are important.

She didn't say 2 cups of bacon, but 2 cups of spinach/onion/bacon mixture.

I would cut your carbs back a little if you're trying to lean out. Do away with the fruit and definitely cut the larabars. They're not bad ingredient wise but they are carb heavy. Leave the honey out of the tea too. Sweet potatoes/BN squash good after a workout but I wouldn't eat them everyday if you're not exercising regulary and especially not for breakfast. Try this for a couple weeks and you should see some weight change.

Calorie counting is a hassle, but you might do it for a couple of weeks just to make sure you're eating what you think you're eating. That looks like a fair amount of food to me, more than I eat in a typical day and I'm 6' 205# and working out 3-4x per week.

When I first figured out how to lose weight, I cut way back on carbs and starches, they essentially made me hungry, especially if I ate a starchy breakfast. I would feel satisfied for about 30-45 minutes and then have the munchies, which led to snacking or an overly large lunch. Low carb isn't for everyone, but I went very low carb (< 25g per day) for a couple of months and it made a huge difference. The biggest help was by eating a no-carb breakfast, which was usually coffee with whole cream (no sugar) and two eggs, sometimes with avocado. You might try cutting way back on the carbs for a couple of weeks and see how that suits you. You can find a lot of Q&A here about people's experience going low carb. For some it is a bit tricky but it can also give great results. After I was low carb for 3-4 months, I have added back a lot of carbs and kept my weight down and gotten even leaner. So it isn't necessarily something you have to do forever.

Eating in this way naturally decreased my appetite and I began to naturally eat less without feeling hungry, and it was easy to skip meals, which I did on occasion (3-4 meals per week).

Also, they say that losing weight is 80% diet but in my experience it is 80% exercise. I can't lose weight without exercising unless I absolutely starve myself. For a while I was exercising at home 3 times per week for 20 minutes, doing high intensity exercises such as push-ups, sit-ups, kettlebells, jump rope, etc. That is really all it took to make a big difference. Then I added walking (just around the neighborhood or while commuting). Nobody is so busy that they can't spend an hour a week exercising. To start with, try exercising at high intensity twice per week. Attending a class can help you get motivated but is more time consuming, but I have been doing crossfit for 6 months and love it (and I have an insanely busy schedule).

Good luck!

The honey in the tea can add up. And the Lara bars too if it's a daily thing (they may not have added sugar, but the dates in them are naturally quite high in sugar)--I'd keep those just as a once-in-awhile snack. Replace them with nuts or dark chocolate.

In general, I'd recommend increasing fat intake and skipping some meals when you're not hungry.

This looks like a tad much for me, for a woman. I would drop the larabars and the honey and the fruit for a couple weeks and see if that changes anything. If you do go for fruit, berries only (lower in sugar).

Are you training at all?

if you're drinking honey all day, that is way too much sugar, on top of the fruit you are eating daily. All sugar sources should be kept to a minimum. Honey and fruits are ok, but in moderation. If you consume them "all day", it's just like having a giant serving of it once every day.

What really helped me was to follow a few general rules (and I lost 35 pounds in 2.5 months and have kept the weight off!):

1) Half of my plate is ALWAYS raw, usually salad.

2) If my veggies are cooked, they're usually steamed.

3) I run a bare minimum of 1 mile everyday. Some days I'm extremely tired, so it takes me FOREVER just to hit one mile. Some days I have a ton of energy, and am now able to run an 18 minute 5k!! Worried about knees/shin splints? Hit up a specialty running store and have them fit your shoes according to your arch/running posture/style. I got an amazing pair of runners for $120 and have no had knee/shin splint issues since the day I got them.

3) I cook with A LOT of herbs because I like flavour.

4) I substitute all of my favourite things. Paleo pizza? NO PROBLEM! It's kinda fun, too.

5) I don't break my day into meals/snacks. I eat when I want, as long as I've had a full 8oz glass of water first and I'm still hungry 10 minutes later.

6) Oh yeah- I drink water CONSTANTLY.

I really think the raw food/salad with every meal really helps, same with the water thing. Half the time I'm not actually hungry, I'm thirsty.

PS. Bacon isn't paleo, and its way too high in fats to help you anyways. Cut the bacon and bring back the coconut oil... or cheat and add a little goats cheese to your salads to give them some oomph. I eat goats cheese everyday.. lol.

I'm 5'8" and lost 50 lbs to get to 165. Past 190 lbs I could not continue losing weight without daily exercise. Diet only worked when I was obese.

Try to sneak in 15 minutes of high intensity plyometrics like burpees, jumping squats, and side to side jumps. Even a few minutes of high intensity exercise can help jumpstart weight loss.
