Not wearing Socks?

Answered on August 19, 2014

Hi Paleo Community,

I read a thread on giving up underwear on PHacks and gave up my draws to great results!

Now I'm meditating on whether socks are really necesarry either.

Do you guys use socks?

What issues may come with never wearing socks with shoes? Athlete's foot? Fungus? Would the smell be unbearable?

I'd love to hear of any personal experience/opinions!

Thanks for making this lifestyle so accessable with ebsites like this one,

J

Fair enough... I will do some reserach about fungal growth etc. I stand corrected re my (quite informed) absolute statement feet necessarily smelling...

If the boots are leather or canvas (i.e. natural material) you could be fine. Of course, it does depend on your body. If they're man-made material that doesn't let your feet "breathe" that could be problematic. But try it. You may discover they rub you and you can't go without socks or you prefer to get a pair of loafers or moccasins or something better.

Hi Matt, I did not realize that this thought would be considered illegitimate. I merely wanted to question something and get some opinions, not reenact a paleo life. -J

Because it's not a legit question, Jackson. If you want to talk about silly reenactment paleo, I'm sure there are other venues on the internet for you to do that (nevermind the irony of using the internet to talk about paleo reenactment...)

Hi Tomboy, I wear Clarks Boots, which are my only pair of shoes. Could this pose a problem in your opinion? My feet definitely feel better without thesocks though! I appreciate your response, J

Hi MathGirl, I was wondering why the other thread was closed. Do you know why? Jackson is actually the name given to me by my folks, which I have created a paleohacks account with a few hours ago. Best, J

The other thread was closed, so you create a new name and post again?

It's a great question, never mind the naysayers. I have had no ill effects from not wearing socks, and my significant other says my feet actually smell BETTER since I stopped wearing them.

Socks actually contribute to fungal growth because they provide the fungi with a warm moist breeding ground.

You could always stuff dried grass or moss around your feet, then wrap them up in pieces of leather if you are really wanting to go caveman. Personally, I like nice thick wool socks this time of year.

Sandals with no socks, wool socks below 50*F, keep my feet happiest. Many shoe companies are making 'sockless' running shoes to cash in on the minimalist trend. There is definite legit paleo interest here, I know my feet have benefited as I removed layers of modern footwear/insulation from the environment.

Socks were the first things I ever gave up. Back in. . . hmm, 2000 or 2001 or so. Except for running because until recently I couldn't find shoes that didn't cut my feet up. Never had a problem with smelling or athlete's foot or any of that -- my feet were cooler and dryer, but that may depend on the shoes you wear.

But now I gave up the shoes too and just go barefoot. Much, much better.

Your shoes will stink and your feet quite possibly will too. If you run or something like that the blisters will likely be extensive.
