Hi,I'm a 41yr old mom of 5 kids. I weigh 135, 5'7 and have 28% body fat. I want to get back down to my normal 120 that I was up until 5yrs ago. I had a lot of stress in my life, made some changes and I'm following paleo. I feel like I don't have any energy, totally unsure and lack motivation to go to the gym. I have low iron, low BP and low blood sugar. I'd love to know what I'm doing or not that has me stuck at this weight and low energy. I take liquid liver iron supplements (just started) and I would love to have direction! Any advice would totally help! I want to feel strength in my body and lower body fat and get weight down to what has been normal for me. Help??

And as for the iron, if you don't want to supplement I think you should be getting enought from red meat but you can make sure you have liver and other offal into your diet. Some might jump at my jugular but they say molasses is pretty helpful with iron... you could also look at some adaptogens, they are said to be safe and a good bet, I'm trying some myself right now to deal with fatigue, so far so good.

I see... by your other replies I think you've been through odd times and you might just still recovering as diet seems solid... beware of that low ferritin, I'd allow myself more fruit if you want it, just don't mix it with cream and fancy stuff and most probably you'll be doing fine, some starches might help also, and I'd make sure I feel full at every meal, you seem to need plenty of nutrient dense food to recover, I'd also allow a lot of seafood, damn full of minerals, vitamins and EPA/DHA, a bless for your brain which right now I think needs it the most :)

Hi, thank you! I did an extensive blood test a few months ago checking extra things that they normally don't check and after my doc reviewed, I had my naturopath review and it showed low Vit A and ferritin at 13 (which is up for me from 0 4yrs ago). I'll get those books you suggested. I have been eating the way you mentioned. I've been GF for 10yrs and for nearly 15yrs our family has eaten organic, home made, etc. I do crave fruit but limit it to one serving a day, like a banana. I sleep well but often need a nap! :)

Hi,thank you! 4yrs ago my husband was out of work and the stress triggered a relapse (from teens)of anorexia that left me in bed, none traceable ferritin and totally depleted-never want that again, took a month to be able to go downstairs. I've been eating well and following Practically Paleo meals for 3 months. I weighed 120-125 for years until the ED and then now I'm 135 and my body inside feels drained and weak. So when I go to do yoga, walk, workout for 30mins I feel drained. I take iron supplements, Vitamins, drink water, sleep well, happy.

Hi Jenn, it might help others help if you post a little more detail about what sort of things you now with diet, lifestyle etc and how those things differ to what you did when you weren't 'paleo'...

For ultimate advice you should see your doc and get some comprehensive bloodwork and post results back. Then we might figure out a good plan for you based on your specific context. From what you say, seems like some metabolic syndrome and/or thyroid issues kicking-in, but just guessing, cannot know without current lifestyle/diet/blood work as Michael already pointed out.

For now, I think that an approach like The Perfect Health Diet or the Epi-Paleo Rx could work well with you until more data available. But just eating good quality meat/fish/eggs/veggies/water plus some occasional fruit/starches and avoiding all refined sugars/sweeteners/vegetable oils/grains/legumes plus taking sunlight and sleeping a lot at night should do the trick.
