Meat Causing a White Tongue?

Answered on August 19, 2014

Okay so I've noticed every time I eat meat, my tongue is a white-ish grey, no matter how many times I brush it, it stays like that for at least two days. In contrast, on days where I just eat vegetables, avocados, berries, and starchy veggies like sweet potato etc, my tongue is usually a very healthy BRIGHT pink :/ Now I've heard your tongue is a clue/reflection to what's going on INSIDE your body, and usually a bright pink tongue mean your insides are thriving! Obviously I want my insides to thrive, so if meat is stopping this from happening is reducing or cutting out meat as a Paleo feasible or healthy? I don't eat nuts or dairy either so it would be kind of hard to get my calories up but I'm sure I could do it, but what do you all think? I know people sometimes associate eating meat with ketosis, which I've heard can cause a white tongue, but I always eat other starches with my meat, and starches stop ketosis... so that couldn't be it right? I'm starting to think my body is just not thriving on meat anymore? I ate a lot of meat when I first started Paleo and maybe my body is just rejecting it now? It's weird b/c I'd always heard a white tongue was associated with sugar, so I don't understand why this only happens when I eat protein! when my tongue is bright pink and healthy I DEFINITELY feel much healthier overall, so I know there's a correlation. So as a Paleo if meat is stopping this from happening is it okay to cut out all meat, or only have it every once in a LONG while (I like having a pink tongue haha)? What do you all think?

I'm not a doctor, only a pharmacist. I guess you could not eat meat if that takes care of the problem :( or you could use gentian violet. It's otc but be careful--it stains! Or if you absolutely want to be sure if it's a yeast infection then see a doctor. Hope it clears up!

If it is candida, should I not eat meat then until it's gone? Or how do I get rid of it? And okay if I do eat meat some days I will do as u suggest and try to eat smaller quantaties of meat in relation to veggies and fruits.but I don't get this same reaction with fish, so maybe I will do as foreveryoung suggested and become a paleo pescitarian!

When you eat your meat do you eat it by itself or with veggies? Maybe try eating smaller quantities of meat with larger portions of veggies/fruit to reduce your oral pH.

If it's Candida, you will be able to smell it. Let your tounge get white and ask a person (preferably not a stranger) if your breath stinks.

Does your breath stink as well? If so it may be a thrush/oral yeast infection.

You can find it most supplement stores and some pharmacies. You can find the protocol on Robb Wolf's website. Just "gut instinct" but if meat does anything to your digestion (at either end) it seems reasonable that you aren't digesting it well and the main factor in meat digestion is the production of HCL. Worse case you are out $15.

Great idea!! Thank you foreveryoung, I'm gonna try your reccomendation of eating fish as my choice of "meat" at home and then only eating meat meat (chicken etc) if I want it when I go out. That might be the answer to have a healthy tongue most of the time :) cuz reading my past food diary entries, I think my tongue was healthy on days I had seafood like salmon! But like I said, not with (chicken, beef etc). so you just reminded me that it seems I just do better with fish! so I will keep meat at a minimum and become a "closet pescatarian" too ;)

Intesting. Are you sure you're drinking enough water/aren't dehydrated? That oculd be the culprit, and hopefully it is.

As to your question "is it okay to cut out all meat only have it once in a while?"

My own opininion is yes, it is. I'm something of what you might call a closet pescatarian, in that when I buy food for my place, it's just a very wide array of seafood, Greek yogurt, and some cheeses (along with fruit and veggies, obviously). I end up eating meat (chicken, pork, lamb, beef, etc) when I go out with others, but not typically at my place. I am doing just fine. Now I write that because some people do not consider meat to be fish, but if you consider seafood meat as well, and you're saying you don't eat that, then I guess that you would end up vegan unless you consume dairty products.

So, what I'm trying to say is you don't need to eat land animals to have a healthy diet, but if you're not doing that, it would be wise to include at least seafood, and some dairy too if you tolerate it. I get bi-annual labs and am happy and healthy.

Try drinking more water and seeing if that does anything.

I've had this too and it went away on its own, but I suspect there was more as I had a mild sinus infection that I got rid of by using coconut oil to rinse out my sinuses for a few days in a row.

It's possible it's candida, or some die off. See this question.

I'm just going to throw this out there. You may have a candida infection. The reason that you notice it when you eat meat is that meat tends to be alkaline, a good environment for yeast to grow in. Fruit and vegetables tend to be more acidic, therefore not providing a good home for the infection to thrive in.

White tongue = Candida

Somehow you're getting a yeast infection.

Betaine HCL for 30 days per Wolf's protocol.

If you aren't digesting/coping with meat well your digestion might not be ideal.
