Liver Qi Stagnation

Answered on August 19, 2014

I realize this question may be out of the Paleo realm.

I've been seeing an acupuncturist for a few weeks who determined I've got "Liver Qi Stagnation". This is not the only acupuncturist to diagnose me with this and "Plum Pit Chi". My trainer, who is Poliquin trained, feels my liver is blocked to hell as well.

Question..What are the best detox methods for the liver that won't have harsh effects? How long does it typically take to detox?

At this point I honestly feel that my liver is blocking my weight loss efforts. With a clean diet(yes little to no nut butter, oils, fruit), Heavy weight lifting, CF, sprints and lots of walking....things should be happening by now. It's been 3 months.

Thanks

Also, I'm sure you have already cut them out, but fructose and alcohol will both occupy the liver something fearsome, so I'd remove them from my diet during liver detox. WebMD has a couple of ideas: http://www.webmd.com/balance/natural-liver-detox-diets-liver-cleansing

No worries. I agree that western medicine can become a difficult drug-for-this drug-for-that affair (actually, I am only guessing that to be the case, I've had no insurance, and thus no doctor visits for nearly a decade). You just need to find a doctor who understands that you do not want a pharmaceutical solution (be they western or eastern), which it sounds like you have done. I only suggested it, as liver work would give other PHers a wider basis to draw from in their suggestions. Given that your labs came back clear, I'm sure we can find something for you.

He gave me a mixture of herbs to take 3x a day for a week. I'll take the herbs as Rx'd but wonder who long it takes to detoxify a liver. ..and if this really is the reason behind my body refusing to drop weight. I've been hacking my own body issues for a while now. :/

I just saw your reply :-) I think it's best to do it over time with diet and liver support. Hang in there! Sorry I don't have another answer for you.

Hey Kyle.. I've pretty much had it with Western Dr's whose just say "Put a pill on it". My bloodwork came back fine the last 3 times. Additionally, I have asked my Chinese Dr these questions as well. He RX'd herbs which I'm taking. I just thought that someone else on here might have some advice on a good liver detox. Thanks

To be fair, there is a period of dis-ease that won't show up in lab work. Labs are a snapshot in time with what is going on in your body and some things fluctuate anyway.

It is going to be hard for us to confirm/deny the diagnosis of a traditional Chinese medical practitioner. If it was me, I'd go to a western doctor and have my liver enzymes and function checked out (to confirm the qi/chi diagnosis).

Additionally, why not ask the practitioners who gave your the diagnosis what actions they recommend you take?
