Just started paleo...and getting cystic acne

I just started a couple days ago, and so the basic, no sugar, no grains, no dairy, the only thing i stray from is a tablespoon of milk in my scrambled eggs. So as soon as i started, i been getting cystic acne, kind of weird pimples. They're really under the skin and are very red, very painful and very smooth. Looks and feels almost like an allergic reaction. I'm wondering ... is it due to the paleo? Or is it my body detoxing. Any one have similar experiences? I also did have very bad acne before, and am controlling it now with clindoxyl. SO just a basic rundown of what i usually eat: Scrambled eggs-eggs, butter, a little bit of milk Lean chicken, lean beef, tuna, veggies (no nightshade ones) sometimes fruit Olive oil (usually in the processing and making of the foods)

Anyone have any ideas? Also i feel like when i take zinc supplements, i get the same kind of reaction... Thanks, paloenewbie :)

Make sure to include fermented foods (as much as you can), or a very strong ALIVE probiotic supplements. Make sure they are really alive. Some raw foods with every meal will help too. I think your digestive system is trying to re-adjust. Help it any way you can.

How old are you? How long have you had "very bad acne", and how long have you been on clindoxyl? I'm tempted to guess your problem is not dietary, unless you have recently introduced a bunch of new food stuffs into your diet (versus removing some stuff and eating more of others).

In all seriousness, two days of paleo isn't likely the cause of your acne. There's always the chance, but it's more likely that the acne came from something you ate within the last week or so before going paleo, if it is food-related at all.

If you keep breaking out continuously over the next two to three weeks, then it might be diet-related, and at that point you can experiment with eliminating certain foods.

Acne is linked to gut health. When you make changes to your diet your gut flora needs to adapt to those. Especially if you go from diet that has more starch to low-starch, meat and fat dominated diet.

I would give it some time and see what happens. It's also possible that this has nothing to do with your diet. Acne is cyclical and comes and goes with no rhyme or reason at times. So don't jump to conclusions just yet.

If you don't see any improvements in 2 to 3 weeks then I would go on elimination diet and try to isolate the foods (if any) that cause problems for you.

There's really no such thing as detox reaction. It's just made up nonsense by quack natural healers to explain things they don't understand.

Overall, I'm pretty lucky with my skin in general, but I broke out when I went GF/DF. After a few weeks of that, my skin was the best it's ever been. I went full paleo about 6 months later and broke out the worst I had ever experienced. Since then, it's been even better than before. But these were normal pimples... not cystic like you're talking about. I would give it a couple of weeks and see if it goes away. If it doesn't, it may not be food related. I would also try to drink A TON of water to ensure all the toxins are getting out of your system. There are also charts that show areas of breakouts on your face and what it can be related to (i.e. food, liver issues, menstruation, etc.)
