Is a Paleo diet also Ketogenic diet? I'm trying to banish my migraines.

Hi, I've been Paleo for approx 50 days now, gained weight somehow and get bloated and uncomfortable most of the time. I "went Paleo" because I'm trying to get rid of migranes, and 10 lbs of weight loss would be nice!

27yo Female 30% body fat BMR is around 1200.

great sleeping habits (better sleep, completely dark, a good 7-10 hours nightly) currently eating 70-75% fat, 20-25%protein, the remainder carb - this may be higher now, I've added in some kefir (2-3 oz daily) and a few berries here and there.

I eat at regular times - 7am, 12:15 pm. and between 6-7:30 pm. total caloric intake on most days, including all oils, etc. is 1250. Why getting LARGER?

I don't snack between meals. food tracking doesn't seem to help with the migraines, and i can no longer determine why they occur. (used to be salt and lack of sleep - now salt doesn't seem to be an issue, and my sleep is well-tamed)

I lift 2-3 x week, not super heavy, but heavy for me - i can't do more than 8 reps without losing good form. I waslk probably 2 times weekly. (I know, it should be more)

I was on topamax and had great success, but the extreme weightloss and hair loss was too much for me. Since topamax i've put on 20 lbs, 10 were needed, 10 weren't. I've been off for 1.5 years and the migraines are back and bad!

I thought paleo was a ketogenic diet (IF you keep carbs under 40ish). My carbs are from 15-35g daily. I track on fitday.com. Am I not ketogenic? Do i have to drastically cut calories to be in a ketogenic diet?

Using CO, and supplements include Magnesium, fish oil (changing over to Omega 3 oil soon), melatonin, strong B complex vitamins, Vit D, Calcium.

My pee and breath are definitely "keto" - but am i on a ketogenic diet? or just in ketosis? how is a keto diet different than paleo? how do i make the change? sample menus, calories, etc would be really helpful.

I want success first with migraine prevention, and secondly with weightloss. It's not like i have much to lose, but have certainly gained weight over these past 50 days. disappointing for sure. Was headache free for 15 days straight (!!!) and now they're back, with a vengeance, and no pattern for me to know what caused them.

Sample diet: Breakfast- 2-3 eggs, 1-3 slices of bacon, 2 oz espresso w 3T Cream (if no espresso, i have a 1/4 cup berries with cream ); lunch - salad with approx 3-6 oz meat (could be eggs, fish, burger, steak), or deli meat wrapped in lettuce with mustard and a hard boiled egg; dinner - meat (same types) and veggies (mostly greens sauteed in CO, though sometimes i have peppers, onions and squash now). occasionally, very occasionally, a 1/2 oz pc of cheese, or berries and cream. never over 3T.

Hack me! please!

Deli meat jumped out at me - nitrates/nitrites/MSGs are big migraine triggers for me. There's lots of all-natural deli meats available that don't have these preservatives, so I would take a look at that.

Isa, if you're still around, I'd also like to know which foods you eliminated.

You said carbs between 15-35grams/day i would imagine you are in ketosis. Under fifty is usually good for that. Changes in barometric pressure can effect a number of things, mostly DJD like arthritis or sinus' issues. Have you been sick or do you have seosonal allergies?

Dairy can be a prolem for some even if you don't realize it...casein and lactose primary culprits. My wife saw improvement to mood and her reflux got better by cutting dairy. Could be worth cutting out for a while to see.

my fats are from meats, eggs, avocados occasionally, cream, butter, and lots of coconut oil, and occasional cheese, never more than an oz at a time. rarely more than 1 oz a day. Why dump dairy?

i;m also gluten free, thinking keto and no gluten would be a magical cure. hormone levels are good, so long as i don't skip any periods. any headache i have triggers a migraine, according to my neurologist (and my pain levels!)

Thanks, RN. I don't think i could fast yet. I can however just eat twice a day, and feel ok. My doctor has also not recommended a long fast, because i am very small (even with the 30% body fat), and get weak pretty easily.. annoying. i think i do have a histamine sensitivity, or at least i do know i had histamine poisoning from some tuna a few weeks ago - caused a mild headache, more of a cloudy feeling, but nothing like a migraine I though Clean-eating would help (thus the paleo) but now im just frustrated, again. i could probably do 16/8 fasting, but would have to have fat in the a.m.

Thanks, JayJay. Throid is fine, cholesterol fine, cortisol high, body fat high, but i am also very petite, so most people (except me) think i'm quite slim. when i did have a migraine the other day, a big cold front was coming in. it was a 2 day migraine (75 and partly cloudy, to 55 and drizzley). Any ideas? OK for Keto being about the macronutrient ratio - where do i stand? 70ish fat, 20ish protein, 10ish carb. are there caloric ranges/limits to which i should adhere to be ketogenic?

Well I could just say that at that level of carbs you should be fairly ketogenic. Paleo is about the types and quality of food. Keto is about the macronutrient ratio.

As far as the topamax thing and migraines....Seems that drug messes with a variety of things considering osteoporosis is a known side effect (along with a ton of other things). Most would agree that getting your D levels checked and adding K to your supplement regimen might be a good idea. Thyroid check out? Gaining weight, feeling bloated, all not good or normal at that caloric load or being keto....gut health maybe off too (maybe GAPS protocol)?

If most of that seems well...any history of head or neck trauma? Sometimes headaches and migraines stem from biomechanical issues of the neck (think chiropractic to fix).

Acually these are all more questions for your history, so feel free to elaborate on some and maybe you can get some more answers. Good luck.

Eggs are the first thing that jumped out at me. I know someone who gets migraines from eggs and corn. Also, try going without caffeine or onions. Make sure the deli meats aren't loaded with nitrates or MSG. I'm also trying for no migraines, okay so far. I lost 11 pounds the first 2 weeks but am overweight to begin with. I couldn't tolerate Topamax because of constant tingling in my hands and feet. Oddly, my cycles became regular on it and have remained so for a year.

I got rid of my migraine (which was daily in the end of july this summer), when I discovered that I strongly react on histamine. I threw out all histamine food and the migraine vanished THE VERY NEXT DAY and NEVER CAME back.

You have probably thought of this--but from what you wrote above about your daily intake, it does not sound like the espresso is consumed daily. I need to have the exact same amount of caffeine at the same time each day or else I get a migraine. This sounds really stupid, but I now take a caffeine pill and drink a cup of decaf so that I get a measured amount of caffeine! I'm still having migraines--and am attempting to find the other potential food sources, but this popped out at me. Good luck!

I have been folowing robb wolf's paleo solution pretty solid since the end of 6/11 and have lost about 25 pounds so far. You are probably 2 high on fat, the wrong kinds of fat and need to dump the dairy.

Keto doesn't work for everyone. It didn't matter for me gluten did, so it appeared to help.

I am guessing you had your hormone levels checked? Estrogen drops are a frequent cause and taking a patch for a few days at the right time of the month can make a big difference if that causes yours. I am guessing you have kept a calendar, but if not it can me useful for that sort of thing.

Also headaches can trigger migraines, going too low carb for me gives me a regular headache that can go migraine.
