Intermittent Fasting-What is it? Can I fit it into my Paleolithic Lifestyle? Weight Loss?

What exactly is Intermittent Fasting? I am a 5'9" Female, 170lbs. and am trying to get down to 155lbs. I have been paleo for about a year and a half now, yet have been slowing down on the workouts for the past month due to a lack of time. Do you think Intermittent Fasting could help or harm? Could I still eat the Paleolithic foods I have grown to need and love?

What exactly indeed. There are many IF protocols. I do a leangains 16/8 IF almost every day. I really like it - it essentially amounts to skipping breakfast and eating more later. YMMV.

It is great to toy around with IF, but be aware that for some reason, men seem to tolerate IF better than women. Try it and see, but many women have developed hormonal issues from trying IF too often. Just a word of caution.

He's implying paleo carbs such as sweet potato, pumpkin and squash.

Thank you! And yes, I was 155 about 2 years ago, then I went up to 165 and just stayed there for a bit, and now I'm at 170! Not sure what's going on, but I'm not liking it!

Farrah. I'll usually only do a 24 hour fast once or twice per week. Most days it's more of a 20-22 hour fast, then I'll heat a couple of meals between then and bedtime. Raydawg, I agree that most of the time, IF is not for a full 24 hours, hence the "up to". The more recommended approach is 18/6, 20/4, etc. I eat 100% paleo, 22/2 IF style and VLC (less than 50g per day) and have lost 25 pounds in just over three months. By being fat-adapted, you can EASILY get by on fewer calorie than your BMR would otherwise suggest without being hungry at all.

Raydawg, by "not to go VLC or ZLC", do you mean that I cannot eat paleo foods? Paleo in itself suggest a low carb lifestyle (with the addition of fruit and vegetables). Also, how often is this done usually? Daily? Weekly? Thank you!

Actually, no it's not upto 24 hours usually, and it doesn't just have to be with just water, you can use coconut oil/coffee/tea. The idea is to avoid carbs/protein. And the exception to protein is BCAAs - but only if you're working out. The usual thing to do is to have an eating window, most commonly between noon to 8pm (shiftable), so that you have 16 hours of fasting. And it's important to eat the same amount of food during the window and also to not go VLC or ZLC.

Off the subject, I think 155 is a perfect goal for you too! Too many people are unrealistic about their weight loss, 155 is healthy and attainable, and yes, fasting can help you get there. I personally prefer a condensed eating window fast every day because it is easy. You can start out by just pushing your breakfast back an hour every day until you don't need to eat in the morning anymore. Then you can choose your feeding window, for many people it is six to eight hours, but there are also protocols that support shorter feeding as well, 5 hours, or even just one gigantic meal. I have tried all of these patterns, even overnight fasts and "Eat Stop Eat" fasts. Do your homework and find what works for you. Here are some resources to help out.

Hi Farrah,

Intermittent Fasting, or IF, is simply fasting for up to 24 hours at a time with nothing but water. It's a common misconception that your metabolism will come to a screeching halt if you don't shove food in your face every two or three hours.

I have been eating Paleo and doing IF for three months and have lost 25 pounds. I'm rarely hungry, because once you get "fat-adapted" by eating hardcore Paleo, your body is better able to use its own fat stores for energy.

Therefore, the hours without food become effortless because your body is using your own fat for its energy needs. By eating Paleo, protein, fat, veggies, and some fruit, your brain stays more satiated, or satisfied, and you don't have the cravings associated with the Insulin roller coaster of the Standard American Diet.

So the short answer is, yes. Try IF and you'll love it.
