I'm Interviewing Art DeVany and want to know, "What would you ask Art?"

I have an opportunity to interview Art DeVany for a magazine feature about Paleo/Primal diets and wanted to see what questions all you Paleo Hacks have for the "Grandfather" of the Paleo movement.

I'll include the most popular question or questions (based on the number of "up" votes) for inclusion in the interview and will give the questioner credit (if desired and with the option of using your paleo hacks user name if you don't want your real name included.)

Some questions I already plan on asking include:

-What is your position on the pros and cons of saturated fat?

-How do you respond to the position taken by T.Colin Campbell, the author of "The China Study" that "the diet-disease associations observed in contemporary times are far more meaningful than what might have occurred during evolutionary times???at least since the last 2.5 million years or so.????

-Could you explain how fractal-geometry can help us to understand why ???regular exercise??? is actually counter-productive and why skipping meals can be a good thing?

As far as question 1 goes, his New Years resolutions posted in his blog on January 1st he had "limit subscriptions" as his number 2 resolution.

Due to the nature of print media, the interview will inevitably be edited substantially. Also, the magazine readership is mostly non-Paleo, so the questions that remain will likely be more "general" in their scope. However, I will be posting the full interview on my blog (Fitnessinanevolutionarydirection.com) which is for the hardcore Paleo/Primal audience and will encourage re-posting across the Paleo-sphere so I want the interview to reflect the true questions of the community.

Excellent observation! It's that old conundrum...feed more quarters into the machine, or let 6969 make it onto the the high scores list?

How important do you think telomeres are to us and does eating a Paleolithic diet help extend telomeres?

Do you see any significant differences between eating to look good and eating to live a long time?

Do younger women find you attractive? Are older dudes jealous of your body?

  1. To what extent do you think that charging money for your website lowered both (a) your blog readership and (b) your book sales?

(I'd expect enlarging his readership to be De Vany's primary goal because it would generate ad revenue and provide a great vehicle for launching his book. He's the economist, though, so maybe I'm missing something.)

  2. Do you read the work of, or talk to, any other well-known figures in the paleo community? Is there anyone with whom you disagree? Are there any trends or widespread beliefs among paleo folks with which you disagree?

  3. Why do you suggest discarding most of the egg yolks in your book? Has your opinion on fat or saturated fat changed at all since writing the book?

  4. Tell us one thing regarding nutrition, health, or fitness that you have changed your mind on in the past year. Any others?

  5. Do you know who the president is? Arthur, what year would you say it is? ... Just make a guess.

[Joking aside, I like Art De Vany and enjoyed his book, so no disrespect. I'm a tad bitter about his business model; and sometimes his attitude raises my eyebrows. Overall, though, I think he's a smart guy and an active, original thinker who makes me think about diet and fitness in new ways that are worth thinking about even when I disagree.]

  • Did you face a lot of backlash over monetizing your site?

  • Would you monetize your site differently...or at all...if you could do it all over again?

  • Do you think that monetizing your site deprived people who would have otherwise read your content and converted to a healthier lifestyle?

Art--your buttocks are so manly and perfect and spherical and round--did you invent the concept of the "bubble butt" and do you feel the gay male community owes you homage and should financially compensate you for your pioneering work in this area?

FED,

  1. I read in his book that his wife was T1DM (type 1 diabetes), correct? Dr. R. Bernstein MD is a T1DM and a strong promoter of the high sat, low carb (mildly ketotic), no grain diet. Has he heard of Bernstein and the success in controlling diabetic complications, BGs and outcomes with Bernstein's diet and methods (namely high saturated fat)? Why? Why not? The best successes I have personally seen in a person with diabetes was one that fully embraced Bernstein...

  2. In his book, DeVany discusses intermittently consuming cheesecake and hot dogs... that's great. I appreciated the transparency. I think this is partly the reason he achieves such high HDLs that he reported in the book. DOES HE KNOW THAT DIETARY SATURATED FATS ARE THE EASIEST WAY TO INCREASE HDL'S ?

Benefits of Saturated Fats link

  1. Has he evolved his thinking in tenable or curious ways since the 'beginning' of this 'paleo' adventure...? What particularly?

Personally I think he is a great thinker and is a great testament to how diet and lifestyles can influence our longevity. He has contributed so much and it was finally wonderful to see the book emerge, which I have frequently recommended to a lot of people that I come in contact (e.g. skeptics). He is not paleo-lite but paleo-reasonable (except the low fat part which is imho ridiculous. hotdogs!! CHEESECAKE!!!) haa

One question: what is the target audience of this magazine? If it's just a general magazine with a readership that is mostly non-Paleo, your questions are too difficult, advanced.

The interview with Art is going to print in a few weeks and due to the nature of magazine editing A LOT of material had to be cut out. Art really exceeded my expectations and really took the time to thoroughly answer my questions (and some of yours too!), so I'll be running the full interview in a four part series on my blog (LiveCaveman.com). As soon as it's up I'll be sure to let you all know!
