How wrong is the rda?

where did they even come up with these values? Are their recommended vitamins and minerals off?

"RDAs are defined in Chapter 2 as the levels of intake of essential nutrients that, on the basis of scientific knowledge, are judged by the Food and Nutrition Board to be adequate to meet the known nutrient needs of practically all healthy persons." Good link.

My understanding is that the values were origninally determined as the minimum amount to avoid the corresponding deficiency disease - ie. 400IU of vitamin D is enough to prevent rickets in all adults. Unless strong evidence exists to raise the levels, they generally won't.

By the way, there is actually some pretty interesting information there. they don't seem to biased, actually stating that liver and eggs are great sources of vitamin A!
