I would love to here other people's take on what they tell their friends and family when they ask for a little more information.

Thanks!

If you don't udnerstand what gene expression means exactly then watch this easy to understand video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kp1bZEUgqVI . "It sounds like you're marketing, and it sounds like you've never taken any biology" marketing what? This is how I would simply explain it, if you want the technical explanation that shows you I know about biology and genetics then you should ask a question "How do you explain the benefits of paleo complicatedly?". And these aren't retarded buzzwords anymore than paleo is a retarded buzzword. ffs.

Vitamin A regulates genes: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9202079 . Circadian rhythms regulate gene expression http://genesdev.cshlp.org/content/2/4/376.full.pdf+html . In fact tons of things seem to change gene expression in individuals, and even though it takes thousands of years for genes to change, epi-genetic factors can change in a single generation and even in a single lifetime.

Okay, so maybe there are people here who don't understand what is meant by epi-genetics and re-expressing your genome, they are pretty much the same thing, and how is this marketing? I don't understand how this would be marketing. Mat Lalonde (phd in organic chemistry), Chris Kresser LC, and Jack Kruse Neurosurgeon all talk about the epigenetic effects of diet and activities on expressing our genes. Vitamin D ALONE regulates the expression of over 1,000 genes in your body http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/01/080125223302.htm. This is how: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kp1bZEUgqVI

I wasn't the one who downvoted you, but I'm guessing it was because you use the phrases "optimal self", "re-expressing your genes", "epi-genetic factors such as food", and "re-express your genome". It sounds like you're marketing, and it sounds like you've never taken any biology, let alone genetics.

Simple? I no longer have chronic sinus infections (haven't had a sick day related to sinus infections in over a year. I used to have them several times a month), my skin is clear, my cycles are regular for the first time in my life, I'm not nearly as hungry between meals, my moods are better, and I rarely have headaches like I did (I've found they tend to follow sugar binges). I didn't experience any of these benefits when I lost weight (okay, my cycles got a tad less erratic. Besides the smaller pant size, that was it), and most got WORSE on a real-food, mostly-vegetarian diet. But usually, I just mention the sinus infection thing.

I don't call it paleo, but eating gluten-free, emphasizing nutrient dense and low-glycemic REAL food (mostly primal by default), has made me overwhelmingly healthier.

Eating unprocessed, real food reduces chronic inflammation. As your body heals, you experience a surge in energy, increased mental acuity and general awesomeness.

I usually follow up by urging the person to give it a try for 30 days and see for themselves!

Hard to argue with results.

what exactly is there to explain? there's nothing all that special about paleo, in fact much of the movement looks an awfuly lot like a fad steeped in modern remedies and genetics testing, which is ironic.

but for me, cooking your own food and buying food that isn't loaded with sugar helps curb cravings. fast food is easy to indulge in, and it always makes me feel like crap. grass fed beef is healthier than factory beef, same goes with all other meats. buy local whenever you can.

also lifestyle is just as important, if not moreso, as the food. set up a regular sleep schedule, reduce stress, try to engage in more personal conversations, spread the love around, etc etc. americans became unhealthy from their own choosing. corporations didn't force you to do anything

Eat foods that come straight from nature, in the form that nature has provided them. Processing adds toxic ingredients and takes away nutrients. Same reason why people go for organic foods and raw foods. Give examples: slab of steak vs hot dog. One is pure and the other is full of chemicals.

To me it's eating how our (great)grandparents used to eat, about 80-90 years ago. before the long shelf life of food in supermarkets. back to basics. We're trying to hack our bad sleep pattern (2 night owls here....) but our overall diet has changed as has our weight and skin.

Be your optimal self by re-expressing your genes using epi-genetic factors such as food and activities to re-express your genome, your hormones, your body composition and your brain.
