Hack Sean Croxton's Paleo Summit

Answered on September 12, 2014
Created February 19, 2012 at 1:39 PM

Well, I'm sure by now you've seen the ads for the upcoming Paleo Summit (which starts a week from today). The lineup of 23 speakers is certainly a paleo who's who. I presume the plan for the summit is to make each video free for 24 hours. And after that, they'll all be behind a pay wall, right?

So my question is, what do folks think about hacking each video here on PH? If we had enough folks who would watch a video and then share their hack here, it'd be a great resource for the community. What do you think?

Update, 2/21: Hmm. Folks seemed reluctant to sign up to be reviewers, so I'll take the hint. Instead, I'll go ahead and create community wiki posts for each speaker the day before their "event" and folks can just comment.

The Paleo Summit is 100% free for a period of time. Yes, the videos are available for only 24 hours but don't you think that one should earn money for putting in hours and hours into something like this? I do.

Kudos to those who choose to offer their life's work for free to the world, they are magnanimous beyond compare. But that should be their decision, and if they ask for adequate compensation for their labors, they should not be derided for such fair intentions. Providing value in return for value, during the course of a transaction of services, should be the default mode of commerce. The modern idea that everything should be made available for free is a ridiculous notion, and pays no respect to the time and energy required of those who become educated for other's benefit.

Well, I don't think there are travel costs (if the clips are a clue, looks like the major presentations are essentially video slide presentations of podcasts) and I'd bet there aren't honorariums (presenters likely get a cut of those who buy access after the 24 hrs). That said, I don't think it's unreasonable for either Sean or the speakers to monetize their time or expertise, and that the 24 hours free access is great. Note: this kind of summit isn't Sean's idea ... there are lots of folks doing this on all sorts of topics.

Sorry, but education isn't free. We seem to be under this everything-free-all-the-time mindset from the internet allowing forums like this to exist. But when organizing something like a summit, he has travel costs, honorariums (possibly) for the speakers, etc. I think it's kind of cool that he's giving 24 hours of free access.

I was thinking that the posters would be on the hook to watch the initial viewing carefully enough to write a review (not an overly detailed synopsis) and others who watched initially would chime in. It's certainly fair that folks should either watch during the initial viewing or upgrade themselves to get all the details.

I'm already registered for the summit. I think some in-depth hacks of each talk are totally worth it.

And yes, each talk is free for 24 hours, then you have to pay. But, if you pay the upgrade for your own files of the talks, you get transcripts and a few ebooks (including the big Whole30 guide) as well. For some people, it may be helpful.

In either case having more discussion here would be a plus for me. I'm all in favor.

One of my favorite expressions I use in teaching is to remind the person who is explaining a topic to "put the cookies on the bottom shelf where the kiddies can get them". I know we do not eat cookies but I have been saying that for decades and do not plan to stop.

Sean, you put the cookies where all the kiddies can reach them. Each interview is wonderfully edited, clear (audio as well as content), not too long, not too short, and jam packed with vital and useful material.

Kudos!

Is it just me? I'm a little put off by the commercial aspect of the Paleo Summit. Free then you have to pay? Personally I don't think that's a good way to build credibility for a concept that is already under scrutiny by the collective wisdom of the general population. If these speakers have something good to say, let it be available to all, forever.
