Gas, breaking out and loose stools! GAH?!

Answered on August 19, 2014

I'm new to Paleo, only a touch over a week. I loved it at first but now I feel like I'm falling apart. I am breaking out like a teenager which suprises me since I'm not eating any greasy foods. I noticed yesterday I felt really bloated and gross but now today my gas is so painful I can't focus on anything else. When I do go... Ahem... Number 2 it is so runny!

Am I doing something wrong here? Is my body rejecting Paleo?

I don't know that it explains your symptoms, but your diet sounds like it's lacking in fat. Add some avocado or homemade dressings to those salads. Adding a probiotic supplement or fermented foods to your diet may help with the gas and bloating. Yogurt or kefir if you can handle dairy (there are coconut milk versions too), refrigerated sauerkraut, kombucha, kimchi, etc.

Would "carb flu" explain my bloating and being thicker? I'm Suprised that with my paleo eating for a week I'm actually in my "fat" pants... Is this normal for carb fly?

I have gotten rid of all carbs and diary. For breakfast I've been having a couple eggs with bacon (ok bacon is kind of greasy haha). I allow myself one cup of coffee with breakfast and only drink water the rest of the day. Lunch is usually some kind of fish and a nice salad with no dressing. Sometimes it iceberg lettuce and sometimes kale. Dinner is the same, a nice salad with fish or sometimes beef or chicken. Snacks are seeds or baby carrots and then probably an apple for "dessert".

The breakouts could be from the toxins being pushed out of your body. It's one of many ways they exit.

Oh, yeah..as far as breaking out --cheap, crappy, rancid fish oil makes me break out with huge boils/cysts all over my back.

I don't know about greasy foods causing breakouts, I would say wheat and crappy industrial oils are more likely culprits (at least in my experience)...have you added anything you didn't include in your previous diet? Maybe you have a food intolerance or allergy that you weren't previously aware of.

Could be (and very likely is) "carb flu". The period where your gut starts to heal/detoxify. Most people's guts have essentially given up- that's the point of indegestion and hearburn. Now that your gut is free to detoxify it is doing so. It'll be a messy week or so but you will bounce back. Let your stomach finish healing. Like any other injury the deeper the cut the longer the heal.

For general wellbeing: Eat more, try a sweet potato or two, vary your food intake, and eat more fat.

Try some organ meats(not recommended for newbies in my opinion, have to be in the paleo mindset to enjoy them, but they're delicious), don't freak out and understand you're actually doing yourself a favor...if you were a heavy carb intaker previously i.e. soda and other stuff then you will have a carb flu most definitely, but it goes away quick(age and carb intake are factors(gut health) I believe).

An olive oil vinaigrette is a good dressing, as is olive oil mayo. If you ate a lot of fiber previously, eat a lot more vegetables in the beginning of your transition. You can ween off them as you replace more nutrients with fat soluble meat sources.

If you tolerate dairy, it's not wrong to get some good butter and milk.

You say you feel like you're falling apart...the key aspect of Paleo is going by how you feel - your energy levels should be AWESOME. If they aren't, wait it out.

I think it takes your body some time to adapt to a new diet. If you're not used to eating meat, say, or veggies, it's possible that your gut doesn't have the right bacteria to deal with an influx of that kind of food. It took me a few weeks to adapt to paleo, digestion-wise.

To get a good answer, you have to give us a list of your current intake foods. The only thing I can tell you without this, is that when I first started Paleo, I would get gassier when combining heavy, fatty meats, and fruit, so eventually I separated them, besides I eat little fruit nowadays anyway. The only other thing I can think of is that some veg like broccoli and cabbage can be somewhat "musical". Really, we need a list of your current Paleo diet.

I to have noticed a major break out with the paleo diet but I feel amazing!!! Breaking out is worth having the energy naturally rather than by drinking 4 cups of coffee/creamer/sugar!! LoL My hubby loves me and my new bffs on my face so that's all that matters to me. he he he

Eat more fat and add some more variety. Your body is most likely in " detox ". Detox is no myth. Your body has been clogged up with you eating crappy, shitty foods most of your life. It finally has a way to " cleanse " and get rid of that crum. Your digestive system is most likely releasing a lot more bile due to higher fat intake. This sort of " cleans " out the digestive system. Remember, if all " toxins " can't exit through the digestive system. The next largest organ they will exit out is the skin. Drink a lot of water with lemon. That also helps to cleanse mucus and the bowels.

After about 4 days of 100% paleo I broke out in head to toe hives and my diet was the only difference. It went away after about 3 days. My body always reacts to major diet changes and its a good thing, just push through :)
