Does your poo smell?

Answered on September 12, 2014

Again, my sincere apologies for yet another poo question, but I'm being completely serious.

I always read that vegan poo doesn't smell. They always say it's because they eat less fat ('because fat is bad for ya!'), but to be honest : after two months of strict paleo and something like 50 different stools I never smelled anything.

It's not the only odor that went away. My room has no smell, my clothes don't smell (I don't even have to change clothes if I want), it's all neutral. I don't even wash myself anymore (it's been 1,5 months since I took my last bath)! Yet all non-paleo people around me smell when they don't wash themselves, their room smells when they wake up, ... I love it!

Anyone else noticed the same effect?

Seriously? What do you think is more likely: 1) People downvote because this is sort of a dumb question and they're tired of reading about shit, or, 2) People downvote because they're so jealous that your shit doesn't stink and theirs does

It's not because you think feces should smell that it really should. I thought farting was natural, but since going paleo I don't fart at all. And keep in mind it's a question, not a statement. I didn't say paleo makes smell go away, I asked if it is possible. I don't know why people always transform my questions into opinions. Also, I notice how a lot of people just down-vote because their feces smell. It's like they're jealous, and I think that's a damn shame.

dude being paleo doesn't mean your shit literally doesn't stink at all. Come on. And I downvoted because I think it's a ridiculous question. No, feces shouldn't smell foul, but it's still shit and it still smells. Even if you have a 100% perfect diet. also, as others have said, you do still have an odor. All of us do. We just get used to it.

I also do not agree on this one. There are times when my poop has really strong smell and there are times when there is no detectable smell at all. Just don't tell me my nose is stuffed.

Yeah, I told my wife after a few days of no shower "but hey I dont smell"....She informed me I was wrong. I think you do hit on an interesting subject in the realm of social standards to natural body odor though. Particularly I do think our society is far to ready to use a variety of toxic and/or abrasive substances to wash away and cover up any "human" odor. Kind of weird.

Thanks, Nemesis! Maybe it's important to mention I don't eat a lot of meat but eat eggs every day. I don't take probiotics but will maybe start doing so.

And that's coming from a guy who asked a question called "Hack my wife's vagina". As a person who often has to deal with constipation and whose father has a bad digestion (he often farts in public, and that's not funny IMO) I think it's totally normal to ask questions about this kind of subject.

Don't agree. 3 months ago, I could smell my poo. It didn't smell, but I knew there was an odor (I always opened the toilet's window to let fresh air in). I now don't smell anything, and I sure don't close the window anymore.

maybe whoever downvoted you is tired about reading your poo questions. Looking at your questions, you seem a little obsessed.

See, this is exactly why I want people to tell me why they down-voted me. Maybe the down-voter's poo smells, I don't know, I just can't think of a valid reason why someone would down-vote this. I'm actually quite interested in the science behind this.

Have you ever gone to a person's house that smelled like urine because their dear old dog or cat is peeing inside the house? Or to a person's house that cooks a lot of spicy foods? You walk through the door and you are overwhelmed with the odor but they go on as if their house doesn't stink because they are used to the smell and don't notice it anymore.

You're one of those people.

Everybody has an odor whether you are a hunter gatherer, paleo, or couch potato. Everyone's home has a characteristic odor. And everyone's clothing, after being worn, takes on those odors.

The odor may not be offensive, but it is there. Oh yeah, your shit stinks just like everyone else's.

My experience is my poo does not reek anymore, I used to have bad digestion problems and going to the bathroom would usually smell up the entire house. Now the smell is minimal, more of an earthy smell really, elimination is quick, no more 20 minute sitting on the throne, and wiping is minimal too, nothing is soft and smears taking many wads of toilet paper to wipe clean,

Mine doesn't smell nearly as bad as it did. And I rarely ever pass gas anymore. I also have less output.

I hate these questions, I know it's "normal" here but bathroom stuff isn't my favorite topic. I just wanted to add my 2 cents because no matter what I eat, my crap ALWAYS smells. My husband however, NEVER has smelly crap and we eat the same foods! Maybe it's a very individual thing and maybe it can change over time but there are a lot of maybe's here. I don't think you're going to nail down an answer on this.

I also agree with mth - people have an odor, I don't know what I smell like but I can smell other people and their clothing and their homes. When my husband leaves for a business trip I don't change the sheets on our bed because I can smell him on the fabric and it's comforting to me.

Actually I've noticed that sometimes my poo smells stronger, sulphuric, because of the meats, eggs and certain veggies I eat. Not every time but at least several days a week. But then, my BM's have been better on Paleo and from taking probiotics, so much for Durianrider's "meat eaters are constipated" myth, lol.

Vegan poo, stinks too, and pretty stinky farts, all day long. Paleo poo stinks, too, but it is different. But it really depends on the other things you eat. The high fruit, onion and garlic of a starchy vegan diet can make things much worse. So, I would rather be with a vegan in an outhouse, but sitting next to Paleo on an all-day bus ride. Your choice.
