Bodybuilding on Paelo

Hey All,

I'm pretty serious about my bodybuilding and have decided to switch over to paleo. It's been going awesome so far, body composition is changing rapdily. I'm getting much leaner, however haven't been putting on much muscle mass. I have been increasing calories but it hasn't been making much difference.

I should be noticing mass gains as I'm taking trenbolone and halodrol. No need for a lecture. ;)

What are your thoughts on serious bodybuilding on a Paleo diet, is it possible?

I've been eating a lot of meat, having around 2-4 WPI shakes a day and have kept my carbs from around 10 - 30g a day. I'll eat two chickens a day sometimes for lunch. My total calories average around 3500+ a day.

I haven't been eating as much vegetables as I should. Fruit is pretty much non existant.

Should I be incorporating other foods into my diet? I've been reading a bit on Marksdailyapple and he hasn't been specific enough in his articles. In one he's quick to say "People on the paleo diet don't care about big, swollen muscles, we care about strength".. something like that. Well, I care about huge, swollen muscles.

Are carbs really that important in bodybuilding, if so what forms of carbs should I be ingesting and is the timing important? My goal is to bulk with minimal fat gains and gain strength.

Supposedly Arnie used to bulk on no carb?

Thanks!

For whatever reasons, Steven has chosen to compete in bodybuilding. No need to disrespect him. People compete in all sorts of stupid shit. If he wants to get oiled up and put on a banana hammock so he can showcase his hard work and dedication, that's his deal. I think looking huge and shredded is a cool goal anyway, because not many people can achieve it. Who are you to fault him for pursuing something he enjoys.

Try carb back loading and adding some raw milk in there, it's the most anabolic substance outside of steroids. Add it to a post work out shake or something, even if it's not paleo.

Add carbs post-workout (for me, sweet potatoes are the best).

I love it when people combine bodybuilding and paleo. Good for you, dude. And meh, to each his own about the steroids.

Anyway, I would say carbs are a bit more needed when you are exercising more extensively as compared to the average paleo-dude. Especially if you're juicin', I'm sure you're hitting the gym multiple times a week and kicking your own ass pretty hard each time. Your muscles are gonna need more glycogen-replenishment I'd imagine.

And, there's something to say about spiking your insulin with carbs. That's supposed to create an anabolic response. I guess it's up to you whether you want to do carbs post-workout or save them all for night-time. Check out "carb back-loading".

I maintained my peak strength for ages on Paelo. It did decline sharply at a stage but I think that was due to some time off from an injury and also coming off the gear. I have gained a bit of mass, but not as much as I'd expect with carbs.

Is there any evidence that supports glycogen/carb shuttling? Mark seems to think it's all a load of crap.

I'd say go for a combination of proteins and carbs, especially post workout. I'm drastically oversimplifying this, but the carbs will essentially shuttle the protein into your muscles, not to mention refueling the glycogen stores if your workout burned them. As far as what kind, you're safe with anything paleo really. Potatoes, sweet potatoes, fruits, plantains, cassava, and the like.

By the way, are you gaining strength but not mass or neither?

"Supposedly Arnie used to bulk on no carb? Yeah arnie also took steroids and other anabolic substances to achieve that unnatural looking physique. Don't get too hung up on body image, it's not everything in life. Just lift weights for functional strength and have fun with it. Forget about all those dumb bodybuilder gym rat "brahs". Those guys do lots of strange things to look the way they look.
