Bathroom Troubles

Answered on August 19, 2014

Hi all! I have been Paleo for about 2 months and am loving it! Just one little set back... I go days without having a BM (3-5days) : ( I get so bloated and really don't feel well. Then once I do go I have horrible constipation and my BM's are tinny. Please help! I don't know what to do, I'm taking magnesium, drinking TONS of water, veggies with every meal, but i will say i have cut my fruit consumption down a lot because i'm trying to loose those last few pounds. People say meat really "stops" you up? Should I see a doctor?

Any help would be appreciated!

To be honest, Potato Starch in kefir kinda backfired on me (pun intended) It worked too well in the bathroom dept. I don't know if I had too much (heaping Tablespoon) in my kefir. I've cut out the potato starch for the moment and sticking to cold potatoes and unripe bananas. That seems to work for me. How are things going for you, Camille? Coconut oil was too stimulating for me as well. Looking forward to an update from you.

That's great! Right now I use Nutiva because I have used it before and it is all my local natural food store had. Any kind is good that is organic, virgin oil (extra virgin is more of a ploy) and cold pressed. Let us know how it works for you!

I will do my research Doris! Thank you for the suggestions. I am loving Paleo too! I literally watched my tummy "de-bloat". Both my Mother and sister have a gluten intolerance so I figured I might too : ) Paleo has helped a lot

Thank you for the suggestions. I tried oatmeal today ( I love oatmeal) plain, and it really helped to get things moving! Maybe this is just one thing I need to experiment with. I'll also try coconut oil, I've heard coconut is a natural laxative. Julius can you suggest a brand?

Yes to more soluble fiber (found in starchy carbs and rice) and also more fat.

Camille, I had that problem too. I found the answer in The Perfect Health Diet by Paul and Shou-Ching Jaminet. Add some white rice and/or white potatoes (preferably cold) to your diet. The starch in these foods help your colon lining to have mucus which is a good thing. It makes stools easier to pass. Look up "resistant starch" to see what other sources there are. I'm about to try putting potato starch in some kefir to see how that works. I got that idea from a blogger called "tatertot" it seems to work for him. I'm now 71 and have been eating w/o bread, refined grains and refined oils for about 3 years. Feel fabulous and don't look too bad for my advanced middle age. Good luck and welcome to the wonderful world of paleo.

I second the suggestion for more fat such as coconut or MCT oil. Also, taking a probiotic pill in addition to some fermented foods (which are not daily for me) really seems to help.

Totally the coconut oil! So had the same problem for 2mths when I started paleo, then I added more fat and coconut oil. I was eating plenty of salad and non-starchy veges so I couldn't understand where I was going wrong! THANK GOD it all seemed to "work itself out", I was seriously wondering if it was ever going to be normal again, especially after 2 mths of horror...

If you are looking to increase the frequency of bowel movements, coconut oil has done this for me and many others. Just take a teaspoon full.

Are you getting enough fiber?

What kind of veggies are you eating?

How much fat?

Is your diet mostly protein?

Try to add some sweet potato once a day or every other day. Eat some more fat.
