Awful Acne, can someone help me?

My entire life I have had perfect skin. I may get a very occasional spot around that time of my cycle but for the most part it's always been very clear. For most of my life I have eaten low fat and high grain/high carb diet about 10 weeks ago I changed to Paleo. Very strict Paleo, so strict that if I'm unsure I avoid. About 4 weeks into the new lifestyle I started to get spots only on my neck/throat and jaw line. My skin is still normal and fine everywhere else. I'm finding it really bothersome because it hurts, it's been here for over 6 weeks with almost no improvement. I suspect it's my body trying to sort out my new diet, increased fat, changing hormones etc. But how long will this last? It's really starting to affect my self esteem. Has anyone else had any experience with this?

I deleted my comment about avoiding GLA because it's an omega 6. It produces prostaglandins of the E series (PGE) and has strong anti-inflammatory effects, blocking the transformation of arachidonic acid to leukotrienes. I'd still just ditch the fish oil but this is good to know.

Chris Masterjohn does an awesome job explaining EFAs and makes me think that all of this fish oil craziness is unnecessary for most healthy people on a clean paleo diet. http://www.westonaprice.org/know-your-fats/precious-yet-perilous

Yeah, GLA is an omega 6 though and I don't see why it wouldn't be better to just ditch the fish oil?

...but finding the root cause could be extremely difficult.

Robb Wolf recommends supplementing with some GLAs if fish oil induces acne. That would be evening primrose oil and the like.

Does strict mean no dairy?

Finding the root cause is more important than suppressing symptoms IMO.

+1 This was my first thought too. Fish oil gives me almost instant cystic acne on my jawline. Interestingly, krill oil does not.

Hm. I realized I'm taking a stronger fish oil than I was before and I've noticed some more breakouts... I thought it was just stress, but I'm going to back off a bit and see if there's a difference.

I'm so sorry you're having to deal with this. I swear I wouldn't wish cystic acne on my worst enemy. Acne along the jaw is usually related to hormones. I take 50-100g chelated zinc daily and use B3 (Niacinamide) mixed with witch hazel topically and this combo has controlled my acne for a few years now. In the meantime some icing will help the inflammation and make it look and feel a bit better.

Have you been taking fish oil? In some people too much DHA can cause overactivity of the sebaceous glands and cause acne.

If this corresponds with your recent change in diet, it may be the ramifications of bacterial die-off in your gut. Paul Jaminet suggests taking activated charcoal for a few days to see if the acne formation stops. If it looks like it's die-off, just be patient and hit the probiotics hard.

Consuming grass fed beef gelatin in the form of bone broth and tendons healed my acne completely.

Prior to that, the only thing that helped me was supplementation with fat soluble vitamins and zinc.

This may not be directly applicable to the original poster, but the single best advice on acne I ever received (and the thing that helped me the most): stop touching your face (or neck, etc.)

I use african black soap to wash with and virgin coconut oil as a moisturizer everyday, it has cleared up my acne and my seborrhoeic dermatitis.

I need nothing more than these two.

Are you consuming dairy? Two major things seem to increase my acne, sugar and dairy, though I've had problems with it since puberty. But I went on a dairy kick the past couple weeks, HUGE flare up, totally dropped it yesterday and already it's clearing some.
