Any tips for an Asian girl interested in the Paleo diet?

Hi, I'm Chinese 13 year old girl! I'm interested in the Paleo diet for that I think an Asian in the U.S. consuming a lot of carbs will pack on pounds o^o So far, I been avoiding rice/bread/pasta and lost as much as 8 lbs in like 2-3 months. I weigh 92 lbs at the height of 5 ft 2 inches. Well, I also lose weight by lowering my calorie intake to 1200. I can't avoid rice for too long...I only been avoiding it by saying it will get stuck in my braces. So my mom allowed me to eat veggies, fish, and meat. Time to time I would be force to eat grains and potatoes. Today my mom forced me to eat lots of corn and tofu for dinner, because we ran out of veggies. I also eat sweets but it's only CHOCOLATE. I hope I don't gain weight. I already been forced to eat 2 regular sized Steak n' Shake french fries for lunch on Saturday. I still eat oatmeal. Only for breakfast along with a hard boiled egg and veggies. I still eat dairy, but it's only Chobani nonfat fruit greek yogurt. So any tips for an Asian like me? Soon I will have to eat rice, which will ruin my version of Paleo. What should I buy to eat? Tomorrow is grocery shopping! So thank you very much ^^

Depends, Travis. Even inadequate paleo is probably healthier than eating foods that you are intolerant too(not that she is, but who knows without testing it out yourself). At 13 I had no idea what was killing me and I would bet that my development could have been a lot better without some of the worse neolithic foods.

I'd also add that if there is any problem with rice and potatoes, it would be quantity makes it poison. 300g a day minimum according to USDA indeed makes it bad, but you are nowhere near that range.

I hope this is rock bottom for you, somehow I doubt it though.

You're playing with your hormones by doing this. Why do you want to lose weight? You are in your growing years and I assume you have already started menstruating. If so, I hope you don't lose your period by doing what you're doing. Females need body fat for fertility(it doesn't matter if you don't want children, it is still a marker of health). Stop the silly low calorie eating and eat normally. I don't see anything wrong with rice but if you don't want rice, tell your parents you will eat a lot of potatoes and other root vegetables instead of the rice/pasta/bread.

You are very young, and you could possibly do so some irreversible damage or even stunt your growth. Don't count calories. Eat quality foods and until your full.

What's important, in my opinion, is this:

  1. Avoid polyunsaturated fats like vegetable oils
  2. Don't eat unfermented soy or grains like wheat(especially if you are allergic)
  3. Don't eat a bunch of weird chemicals, eat real food
  4. Don't get stressed
  5. Don't restrict something because it isn't "paleo" unless you find a reason it's unhealthy or unappetizing, in other words, DON'T BE DOGMATIC

You can probably stick to these and be pretty well off. Anything else is up to you and your individual metabolism/goals. Don't fear carbohydrates, especially in your growing years.

I'll just say, don't worry about it. White rice, corn and potatoes are borderline paleo, and I don't see any reason to go out of your way to avoid them unless you are insulin resistant, which you are not.

Why are you trying to lose weight anyways? You know what people are saying in China ... a girl below 100lbs is either flat or short. Well not necessarily, but you get the point.

So the only advice from paleo to you personally would be avoid junk food. Tell your parents that fries aren't the same as baked/pan-fried/whatever potatoes.

------------Explanantion above, personal advice below----------------------

Ah yes, adolescence ... when everyone wants to rebel against their parents and every girl thinks thin = sexy. Am I guessing this right?

Your parents may not be 'forcing' you to eat grains and potatoes for the right reason (that they think carbs or grains are necessary), but you are probably doing your body more harm by going out of the way to lose weight.

Do take others' advice on this one. Rice and potatoes should be fine for you, and if you really don't want them, make sure you eat enough food while avoiding junk food. Don't restrict your calories.

Worry less about weight. Instead think of building strong, sexy legs and butt. That means much more than a number on your scale.

you're an idiot to lose weight at 5'2", 92 lbs, and age 13. your brain obviously already suffers from a deficiency of brain cells to get the job done. you don't want to inhibit the growth and maturation of your brain and remain retarded as you are. you're not obese. obviously. so your main job should be to get the nutrients you need until you reach maturity.

You say you are interested in paleo, yet I don't think you really are.
