Acne and Paleo

Quick preface and background on my situation:

25 year old male. 6'0" 175lbs. Exercise regularly (3 days of lifting and usually 2-3 days of cardio). I've been dealing with moderate acne for close to 10 years. I've had periods of success, but those are always temporary. Having exhausted all medical options, except accutane, I've moved on to other methods.

Typically, I only get a pimple or two a week. Where I lack in quantity, I make up for it in severity. 75% of pimples I get are very inflammed and large. Most eventually come to a head, but I will get the occasional cyst that lasts months. The worst part is the severe post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation that occurs after 90% of my pimples.

My diet has slowly evolved for the better since I graduated college 3 years ago. I decided to give paleo a shot. A week into paleo, I've noticed a bit of a change:

  • I've broken out a bit more than usual.
  • However, most of the pimples are miniscule bumps that only I can probably see.
  • The few pimples I have seem to:
    • Be smaller than my standard pre-paleo pimple.
    • Come to a head faster
    • Go down faster
  • Still very inflammed and red.
  • My skin is considerably less oily at the end of my workday.

While the larger amount of acne than usual certainly has me pretty freaked out, I am intrigued by the change in my pimples.

Has anyone else suffered from a initial paleo breakout? How does it typically go from your first week to first month to first year?

I had red, inflamed skin with pimples for my first 2-3 weeks. When my sister went Paleo, she had the same issues. We concluded it was just another form of toxins leaving our bodies (our SAD diet was particularly stuffed with pasta as we are of Italian decent). But, after a few weeks, our skin became glowing and glamorous. I say hang in there... it will probably get much better once your body has your hormones figured out and the toxins purged.

I began strict paleo barely a month prior, yet I made a point to decrease the carbs and up the fat. It seems like you're doing that, yet I would possibly take a stab at including bacon. Another person specified some place that bacon made their skin break out and acne vanish, and I've been consuming it consistently and my skin went from steady pimples since I was 11 to totally clear!

Additionally, I had a solid breakout when I initially began strict paleo, with a massive whopper of a zit right on my brow, so I think there is some truth to poisons getting cleaned out.

You may to continue utilizing some lotion on the off chance that you used to utilize that, since you're skin may be excessively dry in the event that you ceased it. I used to saturate each morning and utilization benzoyl peroxide consistently, and I now simply saturate in the morning and that is it.

I'm not sure if you're having butter, but try to eliminate that. I recently brought it back into my cooking and have notice breakouts when I hadn't had them in years.

Also, yes, it could just be your body flushing out the crap inside. Drink plenty of water.
