27 yr old football player with Crohn`s trying to get his life back.

Hi everybody. Im Darragh, originally from Ireland but living in Germany. Im totally new to all of this so I hope I get the right post across. Im a newbee in the world of internet usage apart from facebook and youtube :-)

Iv lived with Crohns for about 8 years now, things were good for the last 4 years or so but i relapsed 6 months ago very badly and have never been so sick in my life. I lost 24kgs of muscle in 11 days, things got very bad at one point!! The meds Iv been taking have stopped working for me and my doc hasnt said it yet but if things dont get better,surgery is going to be the next step. Id d heard of the Paleo/caveman diet in the gym and through the grape vine but never took any real notice. I always ate pretty well, or so i thought until I started to read up on Paleo and its benifits. I read Robb Wolfs book and was amazed at what i thought was healthy, wasnt! I tried the 30 day challange and did ok, still some symptoms but all in all not to bad. My current meds are cortisone steroids and imuran(immune system suppressant) A huge improvement from where i was food and meds wise, believe me.... So.

Iv literally learned of this site in the last hour through a new friend and also found out although iv been eating paleo iv been eating the wrong foods again. Im not worried about weight loss, I want to regain the weight i lost. I went from 85kgs- 60kgs in such a short time my muscles and myself have literally gone. I feel like a skeleton but its motivating me to get on top of this condition and get me life back and get back on the gridiron.

Im not really a science type guy either, iv read some posts and dont understand a lot of the science talk. Im looking forward to learning but iv got a long way to go i suppose.

What id like to know is...

What foods and supplements should I be eating exactly?

When and what kind of training should i be undertaking when I start back?

Is there anything else you would recommend?

Hi justin, no carbs... im not even sure i would know where to start. Ill have a read through those links, the first one you posted seems very interesting. I love to read about poeple that have success with it. Thanks again for the links.

Yea i was able to eat nuts but went a little crazy when i started paleo and now anytime i eat them i just get bloted and cramped up.Im taking a fish oil/omega 3 supplment along with Vit D also. Hoping to have some success with them.

Hi Malory, thanks for info. Im still kinda in the middle of a flare, it comes and goes and everytime i think im making ground it just seems to come back. Im not sure what to do but ill have a look at those diets you recommended. I seemed to have success with a low fiber before and switched to Paleo after xmas. I dont want to rely on the medication but if it can start me on remission id hope to keep myself there with a good diet. I think i could be asking to much of my body right now to just do it with diet alone. Anyway, thanks again for the info and links.

Paleo is a good idea! I was diagnosed with Crohn's about 6 years ago, and started a paleo-style diet very shortly after. 85% of my diet is veggies (I cook them soft and remove all peels and seeds so as to not aggravate my intestines), meats (avoid frying too badly if that gets you sick, I stick to mostly baking/roasting), and fats/oils (butter, coconut, and olive oils being my staples). Avocados are good raw or thrown into cooked food. But everyone has their own unique intolerances so just watch your reactions to things; if something isn't working, get rid of it. I eat some fruit as well, mostly cooked and peeled, but if raw its a small amount. I avoid nuts, I just do better without them.

You might be interested in investigating diets like the SCD (Specific Carbohydrate Diet - http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info/) or GAPS (Gut and Psychology Syndrome - book by Natasha Campbell-McBride). They have some good ideas.

Crohn's is pretty trying and won't go away over night but with a diet that reduces inflammatory/aggravating factors and includes dense and easy-to-digest nutrition it can be improved and hopefully put into remission longterm. Good luck.

this guy completely reversed his crohn's in a very short time and has some intro info on the basic idea of the infamous zero-carb diet. many ppl (even in this community) frowns upon zc but most ppl who tried it swear by it especially if they had crohn's.

http://crohnsdad.com/ I second the scd diet mentioned before. I have read it has a lot of success. I have chrohns too but I also have a redundant colon (extra long) so I don't have the diarrhea problem. I also tend to gain rather than lose weight. Be careful with how many nuts you eat since you can cause inflammation from too many. You have to balance it out with fish oil or salmon.
