Can someone explain what was actually happening in the aftermath of my "lapse"?

I've been mostly paleo (except my primal coffee) for about 6 weeks now. The other night, for all manner of stupid non-reasons, I decided I'd tuck into a box of cheezels. Well all through that night I couldn't sleep, had awful pain in my stomach and was lying in bed wondering whether I was about to vomit explosively.

Obviously I've learnt that I don't like this feeling and it's bad news for my body. I am relishing choosing healthy paleo and/or primal foods now. I am curious to know, however, what exactly was going on inside me to give these symptoms? In days gone by I might have felt a little sick eating junk, maybe, but nothing this extreme.

@OllyThat's an indication that you actually had an intolerance beforehand and your body simply adopted to the strain. Going paleo for six weeks has cleaned your body out entirely, given you time to adjust to meat and veggies only, and that amount of chemicals and grains found in Cheezels (I Googled them and /wow/) was a severe strain. You'd have to gradually adjust to grains/chemicals if that's what you wanted to go back to eating, just to see how you react.
