Does anyone here give their baby Cod-liver Oil?

Until now my 6 month old has been getting Carlson Vitamin D drops daily (400 iu, sometimes on days we don't get any sunshine I'll give him 800iu.) He's still 95% breastfed. He does like to gnaw on Meaty bones and occasionally eats a little green veggies or sweet potato but he's very much a boob man. My serum levels are pretty good. Last time we checked a month ago they were 65.1.

I was thinking of going to a whole food source like Cod Liver oil. The RDA for babies is 400 for vitamin A, then again the Adult RDA is 5000 and I know I get something like 15,000 or so a day from my cod liver oil or beef liver so I'm not sure I trust that amount. Do you guys think I should stick to the Carlson drops or give him cod liver oil. I've tried Cod liver oil on him and he slurped it up happily so I don't think it would be a problem getting him to take it.

Also if I change to cod liver oil should I still give him beef or chicken liver once or twice a week? I'm worried about vitamin A toxicity if he's eating both.

Thoughts?

I'll give you that - it is an old school routine. I've heard great grandmas talk about it, not sure why society then "lost it's way"- especially for marketing purposes. If Johnson and Johnson put out a cod liver oil supplement for babies- they could make some money- as long as it's promoted by pediatricians. Which it's not currently by any that I've seen. I grew up in New England- live in AZ now- we're in the sun all the time.. everyone freaks out that we'll get skin cancer cause we don't use sunscreen as often as we should I guess :/

I can't say it isn't intentional, but he actually really loves those kinda of foods. The funny thing is, the only ones in our family who ever get that jarred earths beat good are my pet rats. I actually on a whim tried to give my son a spoonful and he spit it out. I tried it and I don't blame him. When your veggies are usually covered in garlic, ghee or olive oil and your Lamb and chicken with herbs de provence, etc jarred just ain't gonna cut it. Hahahaha

Thanks for the info. That makes me feel better if another government is recommending it. He doesn't really like liver so I might just ease off on it a bit if I give him the CLO

The WAPF recommends giving it to kids 3 months and up. Even pediatricians are wising up in the past two years and now recommending giving Vitamin D drops starting around 3 months. I waited for the cod liver oil till he's 6 months but I believe it's important for my son to get plenty of vitamin A, D, and EPA/DHA. Sure, he gets some of it from my breastmilk but it's a supplement babies and children have been getting since antiquity because it makes healthy, strong children. I live in New England and we've had a very dark, cold year (even in June!)

We started our little one on fermented cod liver oil as soon as a dear friend told me to google "Weston Price" (when he was about 1). I can't find a definitive answer about the A:D ratio, so I just add a drop of Vitamin D to his fclo/high vitamin butter oil/bone broth concoction every couple of days and make sure he gets plenty of sunshine. I figure since fermented cod liver oil is a whole food and not a synthetic vitamin supplement, the ratios couldn't be too terribly off.

Wow- I never thought of giving CLO to my babies... I don't usually start supplementing anything until after weaning from breastmilk. My kids now take CLO, but my 4 month old just gets boob. Is there any particular reason you're stressing about your baby not getting what he needs from breastmilk? Or are you looking for the extra benefit?
I just focus on making sure I take in all that I need so my milk is nourishing for the baby, then after he/she weans- nutritious meals with some supplements (we do CLO and multi-vitamin).

Everyone gives their babies CLO when they start having solids in Iceland. The health care nurse or doctor makes sure of that :) I??m not sure about toxicity though if you add liver to the equation.

I just started my 7 month old on seven seas cod liver oil. She drinks it but I think I will start to mix it into her food much easier that having her taste the oil.

It does say on the back that it is for infants 0-2yrs but only half teaspoon.

How much do you give her? I have a 9 month old but I'm not sure how much to give her as the seven seas cod liver oil only specifies for toddlers
