I believe (as many others as well, such as Dr. Kurt Harris (Archevore) that Don Matesz has done a serious flip flop and lost credibility.
I went to his AHS presentation and it was pathetic, illogical, and he tried to argue things like since many primates are primarily fruitarian, humans would do well on plant-based diets. It was a shame he took up a spot at AHS that I'd rather hear so many other speakers with greater logic and wisdom like Dr. Kurt Harris, Dr. Jack Kruse, Dr. William Davis, the Jaminets, Nina Planck (Real Food), Melissa Diana Smith (Going Against the Grain), etc.
He went from being Paleo and recommending it for 12-14 years with his previous wife Paleo Chef Rachel Albert to now basically Vegan! I mean if it was so bad, why did it take 12 years to figure it out? Of course his new vegan friendly wife Tracy Minton (with wrinkles) might have something to do with it. http://www.thefoodway.blogspot.com/
I'm curious how does a person like Matesz support Paleo for so long, claim it gave him health problems (yet helped so many of his patients), and not adjust it like Paul Jaminet, Archevore, or others did. I can understand people adjusting the carbs/protein in Paleo, or adding dairy, safe starches, supplements, or doing closer to WAPF etc. to improve their quality of life. Paleo is about eliminating/reducing toxins, particularly from plants. But do go from Vegan to Paleo like this is very suspicious.
I know the acupuncture industry and they make money from selling herbals and repeat treatments. My hubby and I went in the past to acupuncture for inflammation, allergies, pain, etc. all caused by gluten and other SAD stuff. We had about 30-50% benefit but no cure with acupuncture. After Paleo we never found acupuncture any benefit (and we each did 1 session post-Paleo).
Some theories on why Matesz pulled a 180": Pick all, none, or several:
1) SAD, vegetarian, and vegan diets keep many people sick - so repeat business for acupuncture, reiki, chiropractitioner, etc. I see a disproportionate amount of vegetarians and vegans in New Age and complementary medicine (some of which has value) but I wonder how many of them if they went Paleo would need any of that after remission with Paleo. Maybe Don's acupuncture patients left him after being cured from Paleo like my hubby and I stopped our acupuncture. The profit margin on Chinese herbals is high and maybe Paleo interferes with that. There are Paleo-friendly acupuncturists like Chris Kresser that I respect, and who's written well so I'm not anti complementary medicine!
2) He's totally fallen for his new wife's Vegan outlook - complete with false beliefs about meat being ecologically destructive, not allowing for a pastured view. She supports Ornish, McDougal, Esselstyn, Forks over Knives, soy (eating tofu even!) etc. I would have some understanding if she ate WAPF, or fermented her grains and legumes - but she's supporting fake vegan food! What next whole wheat, soy burgers, etc. Wife's blog - notice all the vegan propaganda: http://www.thefoodway.blogspot.com/
3) He's suffering from some nutritional deficiency on a Vegan or vegetarian plant-based diet - Omega 3s, etc. so he's lost his rationality. Don also supports the epidemiological studies like Ancel Keys, saturated fat/cholesterol cause heart disease, and meat gives cancer beliefs! Don doesn't seem aware (or is deliberately ignoring) Denise Minger's great posts. He also thinks you can get ALL nutrition from plants including converting ALA to DHA/EPA (which most disagree is so pathetically low).
4) He's intellectually dishonest and wants to make money from from keeping people sick on Vegan/Vegetarian diet - or get business from that niche of customers (repeat business) and become a GURU in that industry. He's deleted comments or posts in several contexts that implicate this intellectual dishonesty but some have saved them.
Don never addresses autoimmune and gut issues put into remission by Paleo. At this rate he'll start touting that wheat is great!
I like Dr. Harris's post commenting on http://www.archevore.com/panu-weblog/2011/12/13/don-matesz-stumped-by-tim-the-enchanter.html
