Has anyone else found they are a lot more sensitive to alcohols effects since being on a Paleo diet?

I have become very sensitive to drinking alcohol. Previously to Paleo I could easily drink 2 glasses of wine without that much effect. Now I get drunk on 1 glass or even less. Anyone else had the same experience?

So is it that the wine is a better wine for you or is your body able to cope with the wine on that particular night better? I wonder? Activated charcoal and N-Acety-Cyteine thanks!

That's not so good for you, but good for your liver! Hopefully things will change! I also remember that Dr Phinney or some doctor said that alcohol turns immediately to energy so it will affect our Paleo diet.

Yes eating too much makes me feel not at all good. The contrast of feeling good to the way I used to feel is definitely an element. But I am definitely getting tipsy much easier.

I think you are be on the right track that it might be biochemical. I would love to know! I am in Italy and I love the red wines. Normally drink a wine or 2 once a week but have been drinking 1 glass every night here. My first trip to Italy 2 years ago before Paleo I could easily drink 1/2 a bottle and more.

I've found I have significantly less interest in alcohol than I used to since switching to paleo, then bulletproof. But I am more sensitive when I drink wine in particular in odd ways: sometimes I get "insta-headache" and sometimes just "sour-face" from 1 sip of wine (could be mycotoxins or sulfates? never drink beer). If I want wine, what I do now, is sip some of my boyfriend's wine, and if I don't have an instantly bad reaction and want some, I'll order whatever he had (he's not paleo, but has benefited from household food changes). I attribute any increase in speed of drunkness to infrequent drinking (a few times a month).

My preferred alcoholic beverage is Robb Wolf's NorCal 'Rita as it seems to always be safe... . and if I'm having more than one, I use The Bulletproof Executive's protocol of activated charcoal and N-Acetyl-Cysteine. That seems to prevent any hangover like symptoms that I will get if I don't do that.

Re: Judybot

I'm not saying it's technically Paleo or Bulletproof... but a higher grade vodka has always been able to minimize my hangovers.

Also, I only mix with water... maybe a lemon or lime slice if I trust the bartender's food safety. (Fruit peels are wicked gross if their not cleaned.) That cranberry juice is very likely exacerbating the ill side effects. Especially if you're practicing VLC or Bulletproof, that sugar will shock your system.

I may be new to Paleo, but I have decades of hardcore drinking experience...

It certainly doesn't taste as bad as you'd expect, especially if it's top shelf. After the first two, it tastes just like water.

Nope. I used to be a one drink wonder. These days I don't drink often, but when I do, I can have half a bottle of wine and feel more sociable without even necessarily being tipsy.

I have heard of harder liquor, such as whiskey, vodka, etc... having a whole different effect on some people after switching to a paleo diet, so I'm assuming that wine or beer wouldn't be too different? Either way, I don't think it's that unusual for this to happen, and in fact, research shows that this can occur when making other dietary changes, not just paleo. Though I'm not sure if there is an exact answer yet as to why this happens, maybe just look on the brightside, you can spend less on liquor now and more on good paleo food ;)

I'm finding I am more sensitive to Alcohol, allergies, and certain foods.

Had 2 shots of whiskey last night and woke up with headache.  If I don't drink any alcohol, I don't get headaches.  At first it was mostly beer that bothered me.  So I switched to wine, but soon after wine gave me headaches/ hangovers.  So then I switched to hard liquor mixed and I was fine.  But soon afer (maybe a few months), then that liquor bothered me.  Doesn't matter now.  I drink any alcohol and I am super sensitive , and I don't drink much anymore , maybe 3-4 drinks per week tops.

I think these sensitivies beccome greater as my body heals.  Now my body is able to better differentiate between good foods and bad foods.  This isn't necessarally a bad thing, but just my body telling me what is good and bad as it heals from auto immune diseases.

Also when I don't drink, I feel awesone and have lots of energy.  Drinking alcohol drains me, even just a couple of drinks.  My sleep is worse, I feel terrible, and my energy levels during the day suffer.

Yes. I enjoy red wine, but I think it is even more disruptive than vodka, so at least some of this must be due to sulfates. But in either case, it seems to be more powerful.

My tolerance for alcohol decreased as well, and it was making me fill like crap. I felt like I was only getting the ill side affects and not the buzz I used to get. I actually have completely abstained from alcohol as a result, and I feel great.

I'm not sure the cause, but I bet it has something to do with lower blood sugar levels, reduced body weight, and reduced liver glycogen.

Yes, I have noticed increased sensitivity and I have not reduced or increased my alcohol intake. My regular intake is half a 'serving' (3oz wine or half oz whiskey) at night, three or four times a week. Since wine is on paleo in small amounts, I continued my usual pattern. But I notice odd things, like extra clumsiness after 3oz wine, and inability to stay awake an hour after drinking it.

I have noticed that I am SIGNIFICANTLY more sensitive to alcohol. For any biochemists out there: Could it have something to do with the body producing less alcohol dehydrogenase as a physiological adaptation to reduced alcohol consumption? Or could it be that since many of our diets are now much higher in fat that the majority of this enzyme is being used to generate ketones?

Yes, I have become more sensitive to alcohol. It started when I cut out processed food and refined sugars which were the first things to go for me.

There was a time when even the idea of alcohol made me feel ill, but that has passed. I drink no more than once a week and then I drink in moderation. I find the effects of more than 2 or 3 glasses of wine the next day to be unacceptable. Even though I don't get a hangover, I am pretty sluggish.

It also goes with eating too much and not getting enough sleep. Sometimes it's hard to tell which is worst.

I think the contrast with the other 6 days has increased, just making it feel like the consequences are worse. I suspect I used to feel that rubbish all the time.

For me, not so much the getting drunk part, but the amount of alcohol that will give me a hangover has decreased dramatically. Who knows, maybe I was feeling like crud all the time and it is just more noticeable now. This past weekend at a wedding, I had 3 pretty weak cranberry + vodkas, and I felt like I was going to be sick when I got home that night. Also felt like garbage for the next 3 days. Drinking is no fun for me anymore!
