First 30 days - how strict is strict?

Hey all,

I apologize if this question has been asked before, but I was looking around for an answer and didn't quite get what I was looking for. I am currently in the middle of the first 30 days (day 20 actually). I was wondering how much/little it would take to throw your body off of the cleansing that it needs. I went to a party on Saturday and without thinking (I know, I know, shame on me) I ate some hummus on the ends of my raw vegetables. I won't make excuses - I just wasn't thinking. It's not something that I immediately think of as 'bad' now (such as dairy, sugars, etc).

So, my question is - if I had between one and two spoonfuls of hummus, is that going to throw off the cleanse? I.e. Do I need to start the 30 over again?

I'd say that the only element of the SAD diet that you need to keep 100% off is grains, especially gluten. Everything else, is ok if you want to cheat with. I mean, if you want to eat a banana, just go and eat a banana. It won't kill you. But gluten/grains could (accumulatively that is, over a period of years).

Strict is up to you. Remember, the goal is not to make life as hard on yourself as you can. You want to begin something sustainable that you will practice for the rest of your life. These first 30 days are the introduction, but you should not feel guilt over a minor slip up as long as you acknowledge or keep track of what you are doing and feel/see/enjoy the results of your efforts. Plus, a bit of hummus is by no means the end of the world. Ditto on what Eugenia said. It's probably best not to cheat consciously over the first thirty days, but don't get down on yourself here.

If you are doing a Whole30, strict is what it's about. You don't have to do Whole30 to go paleo, but it can be pretty helpful to do it sometime (without any cheats, which negate the point) to find out what the effects are for you.

Bananas aren't a cheat, they're just yummy fruits! If you're doing a Whole 30, then technically hummus is a no-go, but it was a mistake and I wouldn't worry about it!
