Paleo and Xfit Concerns

Answered on August 19, 2014
Created June 27, 2011 at 6:01 PM

I have been doing crossfit and Paleo for the last 2 years. I originally had lost 30 Lbs fairly quickly but have hit a serious wall. I am not sure what to do. I feel that Paleo may no longer be right for me.
As for Crossfit, I also feel that my endurance has not gotten any better.
Any Advise?

I agree with Ryan. I think it would be really useful to see your diet, exercise and sleep schedule. I would track everything for a week here or too and we can start from there.

Or, see if your box would have an interest in adding an endurance class. Ours did, it's pretty popular. It's mostly running with some rowing and I think they do bike rides as well.

What do you eat? There are many ways to eat 'paleo'. I am also very active, and do not feel eating very low in carbs.

30 lbs is a great deal of weight. How much more do you plan to lose?

There's a lot more at play than just food and exercise. Are you sleeping 8 hours minimum in a very dark room? Where are your stress levels at? How much sun are you getting (i.e. Vitamin D?) How much more weight are you trying to lose? What are your fitness goals? How strict paleo are you? How often are you working out?

It's possible you're over training and not giving your body enough time to rest and recover properly.

Like wheelhouse said, do not give up paleo just because the scale is fighting you. In fact, you need to throw that thing out and take note of how you're feeling and how well your clothes fit.

Shoot us some more details and we'll go from there.

I would definitely give up Crossfit before giving up Paleo. There are a ton of good and different ways to exercise, but I cant think that giving up on real, quality food as being beneficial in anyway.

First, it sounds like you are looking to gain endurance, so maybe give up the CF fora bit and start going on runs, or get a bike. Basically if you add endurance, you need to do endurance exercises.

Secondly, on the topic of the diet, if you were to stop paleo, what direction would you go in? I am pretty sure that we here will able to poke holes in just about anything you can come up with. Remember, paleo does nto necessarilly mean low-carb. Have some sweet potatoes and see if you have some of that endurance you are looking for.

Look at your food intake... if paleo is not showing you the preformance you want then I will put money (and a lot of money) that it is because you are not fueling your workouts.

I found out that I was not really eating enough on paleo, yet I was eating until I was full. But when you add how active I am at work, the results I want to get it simple was not enough food. Within a week I noticed an improvement.

Track your food, I like to use the zone measurements because it simple and easy to follow and close enough, other use fitday.

Figure out how much you are eating, what you do in the run of a day then lets start tweaking!

Also the other points in this thread are very valid as well, sleep, stress etc all play factors.

I like CrossFit and do WODs about 3 times a week. Two days are pure strength training. My personal "recovery" was a combination of Paelo and CrossFit started approximately at the same time. If I HAD to give one up, it would be CrossFit. No question. Don't mess with my food...
