Please forgive me if this one has been asked before! I am new to Crossfit - as in, I joined last week and completed my second WOD today - and I signed up to compete in my box's Paleo Challenge. Tomorrow I will get a dip in the Dunk Tank, have my measurements and weight taken, be photographed in my bathing suit, and I will do the WOD. In 35 days, they will remeasure us, take another photo, and have us repeat that same WOD.
I really really want to win! I am pretty familiar with eating Paleo and have been doing so, at about 80% (with dairy and alcohol cheats) for about 6 months. So for the Challenge, I plan on going full-out with my diet, no cheats, and working out at my box MWF (that's all I can swing with my kids' schedules.) How do I lose weight quickly without hurting - and in fact, while actively improving - my performance of the workouts?
My hope is that I am so new to Crossfit, and so out of shape (really, I wheeze my way through a 400m run) that my improvements will ramp up quickly, and I can have that advantage over other gym members who maybe have plateaued in their performance. I am also hoping that being rigorously Paleo, without any cheats, will help me lose weight (since I haven't lost any weight by being Paleo 80% of the time.) Any suggestions are welcome! Please hurry - the weigh in is tomorrow!
(Note: I am a woman, 38 years old, 138 pounds, 5'4".)

If your goal (and the goal of the challenge) is to lose body fat and gain muscle, I highly recommend keeping your training to 3x a week with rest in between. Crossfit is an awesome system and highly effective, but it has the tendency to encourage people who want to lose weight to go hard 5 or 6 days of the week with no rest; this will NOT help you lose body fat or build muscle, as you won't give your body enough time to recover. Losing body fat is largely a function of diet, not exercise, and all the exercise in the world won't help you build muscle if you don't fuel yourself properly and give your body time to get stronger. Good luck on the challenge!

The real prize is improving your health, which sticks with you for the rest of your life, or at least as long as you keep doing it. :)

Well if you really want to win... get strict with your diet! Perhaps check out the Whole30. Watch your nut intake. Avoid snacking. If you really want to get serious, keep fruits to a minimum (especially high sugar choices). Good luck :)

Hey, good luck! I won the paleo challenge at my box last fall. We did not weigh in, but measured inches lost. If you are interested, here are my menu plans for the 4 weeks of challenge, plus 2 extra weeks.
Keep in mind that losing weight and gaining muscle usually do not happen simultaneously. However, since you are new to it, you will probably see rapid improvement during the challenge. My main tips for women when starting crossfit are (1) watch your wrists and other joints. They take some time to gain strength; use wrist wraps if you need to. (2) always ALWAYS go to the bathroom before jumping rope!
