I had been trying all home remedies, saline gargling, ginger lemon honey teas .. but yesterday my throat pain is on scale 9/10 and I have lost all sense of smell and taste .. whatever I eat/ drink I cannot taste or smell it .. I am really worried, throat pain, cough, running nose is very severe ......... I am afraid to go to doctor as I will be given anti biotics ... Please advise what I shall I do. Thanks! I am eating bone broths, chicken soups. Still lot of cough and phelgm. Sometimes I get continuous coughing which is very nauseating and makes me feel drained... I just take ginger honey tea to soothe my throat.

I understand how badly you feel - I am in the process of healing from the worst flu of my life. Like you, I had no energy for weeks and my senses were very dulled. Keep taking your medicine, stay hydrated (bone broth will be your friend - add a little lemon to brighten up the taste), and rest rest rest. Try not to worry too much - read, watch old movies, do easy relaxing things. Remember to finish your antibiotics and follow-up with your doctor. Your appetite will return and you'll be back to your healthy diet before long. Be well!

I had not taken Amoxicillin antibiotic ever in my life as far as I know. I even asked my parents. Last anti biotics I remembered was Azithromycin taken for cough, cold around 3 years back. Since then I had been eating very clean, then strict paleo last 18 months with fermented raw milk, cheese and butter. Never felt this sick. I have started taking this Amoxicillin on Sunday morning .. Feeling a bit better, less phelgm but sereve headache, toothache. No energy. Still no sense of smell and taste.

Eve, Take the Antibiotics -- take the full course. Wait 7 days, then take the probiotics. The Antibiotics stay in your system even after you are done with the pills. If you take the probiotics while the Antibiotics are in your system, you are just throwing money down the drain. DO NOT SKIP THE ANTIBIOTICS. You have strep, not taking the medicine can lead to peritonsillar abscess and/or rheumatic fever. The risk of trying to go untreated are worse than the risk associated with taking the antibiotics.

Your doctor appears to be the typical egotistical asshole who expects unquestioning blind faith compliance..."shut up & follow my advice" but that doesn't mean he is not correct in his diagnosis & prescription. Take the meds & get better. Worry about the side effects later. Try not to die or suffer permanent damage from an easily treated condition. When you're better, find doctor more to your liking. My surgeon was egotistical asshole but I hired him for his skills with a knife not his bedside manner. He did a fine job & the outcome was superb but he was still an asshole.

Take the antibiotic as directed. You sound like you have strep throat and untreated the bacteria can cause permanent heart damage. You can always protect your gut with probiotics, but people died from the "morbid sore throat" and Scarlett fever before we had antibiotics.

Furthermore, the worse the infection gets before you seek proper treatment, you are likely looking at a longer course of medicine, a higher dosage of antibiotics, more than one antibiotic, or a much stronger class of antibiotics.

Unless you have an allergic reaction to the antibiotics (unlikely) the consequences of antibiotics are much less severe than the consequences of the infection raging through your body right now. Generally, you might get an upset tummy. You are wasting time and allowing the infection to continue to spread. You are risking your life.

go to a general practitioner/ internist. Depending on the virus there are numerous treatments. If it's the flu (or something like that) generally my doctor tells me to toughen in out. I bet it's strep. Then they will give you Penicillin or Cephalosporins and tell you to take Acetaminophen for the pain.

Go to the doctor. If you've already gotten this sick, then antibiotics are a safe and appropriate solution compared to allowing it to get worse. Later on you can worry about repopulating your flora with probiotics, fermented foods, feces transplantation, whatever it takes. Right now your priority should be not dying from a bacterial infection.

I'm still not sure you aren't a troll - depending on your age it is unlikely someone alive right now has NEVER taken an antibiotic, considering they are prescribed for a variety of childhood illnesses. But on the off chance you are just really, really naive and have been sheltered from modern medicine - TAKE YOUR ANTIBIOTICS, and please FINISH THE ENTIRE COURSE. One of the reasons (along with over-prescribing) we suffer from drug resistant bacterias is people who stop their course of antibiotics when they start to feel better. FINISH THE PILLS ONCE YOU START TAKING THEM - take them as prescribed. Feel better.

Even the best diet won't keep you from getting sick sometimes. I'm glad you went to the doctor. Don't be scared of taking antibiotics for a bacterial infection, that is what they are for. Very rarely people can be allergic to them, but you would've discovered that after the first dose by getting tongue swelling or hives, I doubt your headache has anything to do with that.

Being sick sucks, you are going to feel like crap for a while, and then you'll feel better. The change in color in your phlegm is an excellent sign, it means the antibiotic is working, keep taking it until it is all gone to make sure whatever it is doesn't get a chance to become antibiotic resistant.

I just had to do a round of them myself for whooping cough. My naturopath gave me a bottle of Pro-5 probiotics that seems to be doing a really good job of rebalancing my gut afterwards too. So I would recommend searching out a high quality probiotic for when you are done with the antibiotics. If the antibiotic gives you diarrhea or you notice thrush or yeast infection symptoms a kind of supplemental yeast called saccharomyces boulardii can be really helpful.

I think there is too much hysteria about wiping out gut flora and antibiotics. Certainly when they are abused or used too much there can be problems. But when used judiciously your gut flora will repopulate without issues. I think we forget that every bite of food we eat is covered with bacteria, and lactofermented foods are extra rich in beneficial bacteria, but even a salad will have bacteria that will end up in your gut. It is thought the variety of bacteria in our microbiome has decreased in recent years, but that could be from a lack of variety in our environment from cleaning products and antibiotic use in animal feed, a lack of variety in our diets, or an increase in cesarean births, as much as antibiotic use.

I hope you feel better soon.

Thanks everyone for your answers. I completed my Antibiotic course for 10 days which cured my sore throat but still I have little cough and phelgm which is not severe. The major problem after this course of antibiotics is that my digestive system is not same as before. I keep getting stomach cramps after meals and sometimes I get diarrhea. I really dont know what to eat. I am mainly eating bananas, soups, well cooked veggies, stewed apples, little meat stews, chicken, fish, some white rice (1/2 cup or less for dinner) and sometimes yoghurt. I also ate 2 oz grassfed beef liver every other day. I feel completely drained off energy and feel so tired and exhausted. Does antibiotics have such effect on our system? Please help me what I should eat now to boost my energy levels and most importantly cure my digestive system.

I can kind of see where she's coming from. I'm dealing with some crap right now. I'd rather try and beat it by myself than just start scarfing antibiotics.

But, I do have clear lines drawn in the sand... when this infection crosses that line I'm getting help.

Also, I think most doctors are getting better about not prescribing antibiotics preventatively. Just because you don't receive a culture doesn't mean an experienced professional can't identify the nature of your infection. I'm betting most seasoned Drs see a lot of sore throats. Over time I'm sure they can isolate some identifying markers.

I am not trolling. I am seriously sick. I started antibiotic yesterday first dose in morning and then at night. I have got very severe headache which was not present before. Also there is pain in my lower jaw and teeth. After antibiotics, the color of phlem have changed from dark yellow to pale, less pain in throat but still no sense of smell and taste. Also I got constipated today. I ate yoghurt, banana and some veggies yesterday but still not regular bowels. May be these are die offs .. All bateria is dying. Please tell me this Amoxicillin will kill all the bacteria in my gut or only ones causing infection? I never took this before. The name pencillin itself makes me very scared. Thought I was very healthy with good immunity until got this severe infection.

@Eve- Did you start the treatment? Yes, Kresser makes some good points but I'm sure he's not advocating death or permanent injury as an alternative to antibiotics, especially in a situation like yours. If you are a troll.. a pox be upon you.

I went to the doctor and he gave me Amoxicillin 500 - 2 capsules twice a day for TEN days. When I asked him if this is safe to use he asked who is the doctor? I am not sure to take this medicine or not but my throat pain is getting very severe.

Take the antibiotic as directed. You sound like you have strep throat and untreated the bacteria can cause permanent heart damage. You can always protect your gut with probiotics, but people died from the "morbid sore throat" and Scarlett fever before we had antibiotics.

It is hard to tell if you are trolling or just overly hysterical. If you acted this over the top at the doctor's office, I can see why he would have been a little short with you. It is hard to believe you'd be this freaked out over taking a common antibiotic when you were supposedly so sick.

Anyone please advise what probiotics I shall take along with this Amoxicillin antibiotic. It is so powerful, would wipe out my gut completely.

The risk of trying to go untreated are worse than the risk associated with taking the antibiotics.

why do you want to get worse? take the damn medicine. it's not that hard. if you were sick in the paleolithic era with this problem, you'd probably die. that's why we live longer today- we have medicine to fix crap.

Had you started early on,you could have used fresh finely ,chopped garlic in place of an antibiotic. A chopped clove three times a day at regular intervals works as good,if not better than an antibiotic. Add a little cayenne pepper and you are doing better. The garlic can be chopped and either swallowed all at once with something like orange juice or milk or a little at a time. Garlic is a natrual antibiotic and also has antiviral and antifungal properties.

This isn't particularly helpful when she's this sick already.
