The wife suffered a recent neck injury and she's anti-ibuprofen so her ortho suggested Voltaren gel, which is applied externally to the sore spot.
Is this a good alternative or are there other options out there for someone with acute pain/stiffness.

Agree with Luckie's suggestions. Your wife could try curcumin for pain relief if she wants something natural. I tried it for migraines with only some relief but she may have a better response. Also, accupressure is fantastic. I've had a really good result with it for a stiff neck that aspirin (which I practically overdosed on) didn't even touch. Heat packs may additionally bring some relief. Good luck.
