Hack my leg pain!

This may get long but here goes! I'm a 22 year old female, have lost 70 pounds and regained 10. I now weigh 170 and I'm 5'8". I've never been completely paleo but have been incorporating it for about a year after 13 years as a vegetarian/4 as a vegan. I've had some on and off problems with my leg for almost a year now that just seem to be getting worse and wanted to see if anyone out there had similar problems.

It started in my right knee in that U-shaped area that is infamous for problems. At this point I was doing a "crossfit bootcamp" with terrible instruction. Lots of running in vibrams, long met-cons five days a week. The pain was localized in the knee at this point.

Around July of last year I switched to a crossfit affiliate and went 2-4 times/week. The pain was rare and minimal if present. In late November I got a new job and stopped working out for 2 months besides sporadic runs. During this time I'd go dancing often in high heels and one night in January I woke up barely able to walk because my entire right leg hurt so bad, most intense in that same knee. I waddled around until it stretched out and went away somewhat, but it still felt sore.

That was the worst pain but since then it hasn't gone away. I've iced, foam rolled, rested. It feels like real pain on the outside of my right knee but I have stiffness and soreness from my hip to my ankle every day. The left leg now feels similar but much more mild. It gets MUCH better the more regularly I'm working out and I start to forget about it but I just went on vacation and by the end of the week it was almost as bad as that first day. I also can't wear heels at all or it gets BAD almost instantly.

For what it's worth, I go to another crossfit affiliate now 3-5 times a week. Two lifting days, two short (5-15 minute) conditioning workouts and one long (40ish minutes) metcon. I usually skip the long one because they generally involved tons of running or air squats, which seem to aggravate it. I always get to the lifting days. So sometimes it's 2 lifting days and 1 short workout. I work a desk job.

I'm going to look for a doctor of course, but just wanted to see if anyone had a similar experience. What's wrong with me?!

What it sounds like that you're experiencing is called IT band syndrome, or illiotibial band syndrome. I can't explain any better than wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iliotibial_band_syndrome. I've had a friend who had this problem which took quite a bit of time to remedy, but it was remedied nonetheless. She used a stiff roller and got IT bad treatment from a physical therapist. Good luck with your diet, and injury, I hope you get passed it quickly.

Hack your leg pain? That sounds, um, painful! My honest opinion is that it would only make things worse.
