What was your biggest motivator to give up toxic (food, cosmetics, etc.)?

I have the opportunity to make a presentation for my college class on toxicity. Most likely none of the student know what true health is. I am going to talk to them about toxic house hold products, personal care products, water, medication, food (GMO's, pesticides, sugar...so on), ..and more! But I was wondering what motivated those of you who are aware of daily toxins and make an effort to avoid them. Any particular video? speech? what really made you make that change?

I'm really hoping to inspire even a few listeners to make some changes to become healthier. Thanks!:)

I started off just using raw honey that crystallized on me. Then I mixed honey with flour or fine, dry espresso grounds. Now I stick with a combo of dry espresso grounds, enough honey to make a paste, and a few drops each of tea tree oil and lavender essential oil. Smells like a good morning!

Oh, I love washing my face with honey! When I have a few minutes, I steam my face with a hot cloth, rub on some raw honey, let it sit a bit, then steam it off again. Lovely feeling, good for the skin, and it just smells lovely! The Crunchy Betty blog has a lot of honey-washing info.

Amen! Some of those studies that show the amount of chemicals in fetuses is astonishing. And so many people wonder how toddlers get cancers and illnesses!

Thank you so much for sharing that! I love to hear when people take their health into their own hands and go against conventional "wisdom" of poisoning our way back to health. Your comment made me think about showing the class a picture of a factory where most of the food they eat is from vs a picture of organic fields of crops or animals that we were created to eat. And asking them were they would rather their FOOD come from. Thank you & keep on inspiring people!

Crazy when you link the "foods" you've been eating to the problems or side effects you've been having, most people just cannot link the connection between the two in today's age.

That is awesome! I always try and tell people who complain about their acne that the less of their fancy facewash (harsh chemicals) they use, the better off they will be. I have never suffered myself with severe acne, just a deep pimple here and there. Actually, I am suffering with one right now! What were you saying about the honey and coffee grounds?:)

Eliminating the visceral fat pack around the internal organs allows them to work better detoxifying the body and is probably the best single thing a person can do for themselves.

For me, it was weight loss. After years of toxic eating and horrible eating habits during college, I had gained over 15 kg and was feeling terrible about myself. Little did I know, that all of my GI problems (GERD, Gastritis, gas, etc) and extreme fatigue/headaches would disappear DAYS after becoming Paleo. Once I realized all of the extra benefits I had gained other than weight and fat loss, I was hooked. I know now this is the way I am meant to eat for the rest of my life. I have never felt so good!

A turning point for me was the documentary, Food Inc. It really opened my eyes to a lot of things beyond the nutrition label and inspired me to really think about where my food comes from and the long term effects of such food.

What gets me is this -- why would I pay to slowly poison myself? When I'm PLENTY smart enough to figure out what raw materials meet my "modern needs"? I guess that's what motivates me. The precautionary principle. If I'm polluting me a tiny bit by using some cheap cosmetic or eating something manufactured, I sometimes visualize the factory that the item came out of. I think we forget about the sheer scale of crap that our consumption requires.

And honestly, women's cancers. I have an estrogen-fed disease that I'd like to keep in check. I think about what I want to be storing in my body fat my entire life, or burning out from my body fat. Why in the name of vanity would I possibly sentence myself to chemo? It's not like anyone of my friends or colleagues can look/sniff/feel me and figure out that I'm not using conventional deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, or lotion.

I have an autoimmune disease and I've tried everything in the medical field possible to try and fix it. Nothing worked. I started finally doing research on alternative treatments and augmenting my diet kept coming up. I'm only a month into this "experiment" but changing my diet has made me feel amazing. I'm not as tired and my mood is better. So even if it doesn't help my condition, I feel better.

The things that show up in mothers and fetuses, and how we don't know the lasting effects of such items.

Specifically BPA and GMOs.

I've always had bad acne. Part of my PCOS. Amazingly enough, all that salicylic acid made it worse. I quit face washed with acne meds, and my skin improved. Then I quit commercial face wash and started washing my skin with honey and espresso grounds. Skin got even better. Then I cut back on carbs and gluten and started eating more protein and fat, and it got even better. Cod liver oil supplementation has also further increased my skin health, and now my skin is clear the majority of the time. I also don't wear as much makeup, and only use products with limited ingredients (Bare Minerals) when I do. I don't use moisturizer, and I have found my skin to be much more resilient as a result.

My biggest motivator was changing jobs and moving out of the city into the country. It wasn't intentional. But now I have plenty of fresh air, less stinking bus and car exhaust, easy access to locally grown fresh foods and less stress. Boredom is a good thing in a lot of ways.

So my advice. If you want to detoxify get outta town.

Sadly, I cannot pinpoint one major eye-opener. I had to research for probably 7 years in total before I found Paleo, and it was randomly brought to my attention by a coworker that is really fit. I was diagnosed with Crohns 8 years ago and tried everything, raw food diet, food combination diet, lactose free diet, etc and nothing worked. Paleo cured me and I've never felt better. I think it is a crime that there is so much BS out there drowning the truth, and the truth is so hard to find. It's also a crime that so many people don't want to even try it even when they know about it. Good luck with your presentation!

I would suggest that you ask the class to give up wheat for just two weeks and have them judge the difference for themselves. With friends and family, this approach has worked because many (not all) people see a significant difference in gut discomfort within two days.

Some of the Story of Stuff videos really raised my interest in avoiding toxic household products. I'm not saying they're faultless as far as accuracy goes, but they're really well put together and motivating. The cosmetics video got me to examine and change some of the things I was using on a near daily basis (e.g. soaps, shampoo, toothpaste).
